Safety aids are all still active, just less intrusive. Obviously not a good idea to use sport+ on an icy day

It reduces their "interference", thats the difference between "Sport and Sport+", I never used it on any of my cars and the last 4 new cars all had it. Sport mode is enough IMO.
Sport can be configured, I drive in Sport Chassis only all the time, tightens up the suspension and steering without changing gearbox settings.

had mine for a month now and can't fault it! The best way of explaining this by listing out my experience by driving mode.

Sport+
Performance simply stunning,
handling a little "dynamic" at times but that's what this mode is all about, you have to use opposite lock quite often, and not at "the limit" either, great fun.
steering is very taught and precise, and gives a good feel of the road too.
suspension is firm but not hard, or uncomfortable

Sport
Performance still simply stunning,
handling a lot more predictable but still without the traction stability control kicking in & intruding...
Steering taught as per sport +
suspension is firm but not hard, or uncomfortable

the main difference between Sport & sport plus is the handling.... performance
roughly the same.

engine tends to rev at around 2000 - 2500 when in full auto mode

Comfort
Performance still quite good but definatley a bit of a lag in response times. kickdown takes longer to react too.. sport is instant.
steering, handling and suspension seem to be more relaxed. but still predictable, definately not boat like, but does give an impression of wafting along.

engine revs around 1000-1500 when left to its own devices in full auto...

car is very, very quiet in this mode. adding to the wafting impression @ 40-60mph. sitting inside you wouldn't know it was a diesel. passengers have commented on this and have been surprised when I tell them its a diesel car

Eco Pro

Performance lag in response times quite noticable. kickdown takes even longer to react too..
steering, handling and suspension like comfort. but still predictable, definately still not boat like, but does give an impression of wafting along.

engine revs around 1000-1500 when left to its own devices in full auto...

as it's great for slow traffic in this mode.

no difference in braking across modes, all very quick!

also not seeing a real difference in MPG with the modes in the same driving style, & conditions. getting around 38 in sport & 40 in comfort, & 44 in Eco Pro but when pushing it, this changes sport gives around 30, but pushing it in comfort is pointless, easier just to push the mode button & go into sport.

so in summary the tech goodies seem to make a difference and so worth it in my book

I find myself switching modes quite a lot on a single journey depending on traffic conditions road type etc...

if getting an MSport here's my prioritsed link. this assumes you already have sport auto..

1) Variable MSport Suspension
1) Variable Steering
2) M Sport Brakes

notice I think if going for the variable supsension you should also go for the steering. the two together make sport and sport + modes.
Nice write up

Great to see how a modern car can do sport AND wafting with a click of a button

Just a note, the standard steering also tightens up with mode change, so not necessary to have the VSS option to get this.

This is true BUT it's not configurable and that makes a lot of difference.

Is that just with the standard auto? I understand with SAT option, the steering will firm up in sport with the 'drivetrain' configuration.

With "adaptive" you get the option of configuring the Sport mode, so when you select sport the main screen (if it's ticked to show) changes from whatever mode showing eg: Navigation/music etc too Sport settings, once their you can select chassis only which switches out gearbox changes and leaves you with tighter steering and suspension ONLY.

Pretty sure you get that screen in all cars, of course if you don't have adaptive suspension it can't turn that on.

It is a shame you can't have a user defined mode that you get in some other marques.

Another question for the F30/1 with adaptive suspension. How are you finding the difference to the steering feel, when you have just 'drivetrain' configured, compared to 'drivetrain and chassis', when running in sport mode? Has anyone tried it with only the drivetrain configuration? Not the normal way I know, but just for how it feels.

Wondering if it is the same as my 5-series. There is more feel to the steering with both configured, not more weighting but definitely more steering feel and road feedback. Really it is expected, as the suspension is stiffer and that is a contributor to road feel.

I've tried it just to see what feel we get from the different parts of the adaption features. Normally I'd be the other way, just the 'chassis' configured and leave the 'drivetrain' to be adapted by me, with the stick when I want it.

But isn't that what we get, 3 options in the i-Drive menu which 'as driver' we select from?

Or do you mean even more options, like steering, throttle, transmission, chassis... all as individual functions, which we can 'pick and mix' from?

Well in the BMW you can select chassis/powertrain functions, but even this is a faff as it is selected in iDrive.

With Audi you get a 'personal setting' button where you can mix and match whatever you like and are able to have sport steering mode with soft suspension, etc. Things that you can't seperate out in BMW.
