where are the RWD 328i in New England?
Of the three large dealers near my home NONE of them even have ONE RWD car in stock. I find that hard to believe, but it's true. Neither Tully BMW, Wagner BMW, or BMW of Sudbury even have one to test drive! The reason, according to one CA, is that "nobody buys them in New England". I also find that hard to believe. I live in Acton, MA about 20 miles northwest of Boston.

I live in St. Louis and we hardly have any on the lots either even though our winters are nothing like yours. So many people are now convinced they can't drive in even one inch of snow without AWD. The dealers stock what sells.

Idk Ive driven multiple bimmers on basically dustings/def under an inch, and had traction issues...X drive is just piece of mind for me, and I dont have to slow down in the rain!

I really don't understand what the AWD obsession is for. Most cars in the north that are on the road are not AWD, and for decades people have been making it through winters with the proper set of tires on their vehicle. I will be at least one person w/ a RWD BMW this winter here in NE... with winter tires... and I think I'll be just fine. |

Yes. AWD does nothing to improve traction in the wet, other than initial take-off if accelerating very hard..
This misunderstanding explains why most vehicles in the ditch having slid off the road in wet or snowy conditions are AWD. Marketing triumphs over reality once again. The dealers intelligently stock what people want to buy and enjoy the premium they can charge. |

I don't know. Where I live we have our share of mostly SUVs in ditches but I always enjoy seeing the RWD folks fishtail everywhere with no forward progress. Now I live in a part of NY with plenty of hills and sometimes the traffic stops which is challenging for a RWD car to get started again. To me the draw for AWD is that I don't need winter tires for 4 months of the year - sacrificing performance for 99 percent of the winter.

Opposite problem in Phoenix. Good luck finding a single Xdrive 3 or 5 on a lot here.

BMW of Ridgefield has one or two I saw this morning on the lot that are RWD...F30 RWD's are hard to come across in NE.
I feel like i'm the only on here!

There are some but very few. My dealer currently has ~110 X drive 3's in stock and 10 RWD 3's.
Better premiums on the X and it's an easy sell. Most people who really want things like RWD and manuals will be more likely to order the car exactly how they wanted. Also good luck finding a car with packages like DHP, most people don't care about how their suspension feels they want leather and safety cameras.

I have chatted with both bmw boston and norwood about this exact thing.. it is two fold 1. both dealers said the xdrive product mix was in the mid 90%.. 2. RWD is the same thing with trying to find a manual, in NE the typical RWD (or manual) buyer wants to special order so there is little value in having one on the lot... like you mentioned you are looking to test drive not buy off the lot. if you are the type of customer that knows you want RWD its a high probability you are looking to special order.

So BMW's engineers have actually invented a way of increasing the coefficient of friction of the tires to the road surface just by adding drive to the front wheels through a couple of wet clutches and a front drive shaft? Somebody call the guys over at the Nobel Prize committee! Idiots like you are the ones causing accidents in poor conditions. X-drive doesn't help you once you're in a skid, that is tires job and that's just a fact. Infact AWD gives you a false security and when you reach the breaking point, you're pretty much screwed already. Honestly don't know if you're serious but if you were.... well then |

I've owned only RWD BMWs since 2005. Truth be told, though, I don't drive my 335i in the winter. If the weather is nice -- and the road is completely dry -- I'll take it out. But the real reason I don't drive it isn't worries about traction. I simply don't want my $50K car to get salt all over it. In New England, we use enough of it so that some days the road is bleached white. That stuff, once it's all up inside your car, never really comes out. Salt/sand spray is like sandblasting the exterior paint, especially when you get stuck behind a truck or worse, a plow convoy. My winter wheels are on a AWD Toyota RAV4. I admit not everyone has a winter betah, but driving one only makes getting into a pristine BMW when it's nice even more fun.

And it's common sense that AWD makes people who don't understand the physics of driving feel more confident -- usually that translates into them driving faster and endangering themselves and everyone else. AWD is a good thing, but as the owner's manuals all warn it won't repeal the laws of physics.

I live in Dracut Ma, no too far away from you and my Mother in Law lives in Littleton next to you.
I got a 335M RWD, I done EURO delivery RWD drives aways different than AWD, I had other two RWD which with snow tires were FUN on snow, I never got stuck, in the other hand I had 1 2007 335XI and its suspension suck big time + you could feel those 300hp pulling the steering under hard acceleration. Solution, do what I did, build yours and don't forget to add M-Sport Sunday morning im always in Littleton PM

Winter is coming, so dealers have AWD. Usually around April, there will be more RWD vehicles in dealerships. You could always order RWD regardless of the time of year.
