Choosing insurer
Not easy to compare quotes at a glance due to inclusions and exclusions. But thought I would share my shopping around for inf of others. Any suggestions also welcome.
Quotes are for couple in early sixties, living Surrey, car kept on drive. No sins or claims to report over 5 year period (except windscreen 4 years ago, and see Admiral). Generally gone for £500 excess, courtesy car, protected no claims - but that can mean quite different things. No legal cover if an option. No business or commuting. Estimated 13000 miles a year. Have 14 years no claims entitlement, partly due to previous protection. Done by phone; I find these quotes just too laborious to do on line.* CURRENT - e91 335d SE. MORE THAN. £362. Stayed with them for a while, not least because of a triple guarantee - no loss of NCB, no increase in premium, and no refusal of cover due to claims. This guarantee is not available to new clients. NEW - F31 335d xd Lux, with £10000 of options. 1. MORE THAN. £585 with excess increased to £750. Pay £2 a day for European cover beyond 7 days. 2. LV. With CSMA discount of 10%, £373 to include 180 days of European cover. No need to inform them of winter wheels/tyres. 3. First Direct. £800 including European cover of up to 60 days per trip. 4. Direct Line. £392. European cover at £80 per 31 days. 5. Admiral. The only one to ask for list of options. The only one to ask about "awareness" courses, one of which I needed to acknowledge. £586. 6. John Lewis. Slow. I think I had the trainee. £418. 7. A Plan. I chased after 24 hours. It became clear that, in absence of a tracker, they could not get within £100 of best quote. 8. BMW. £446 without courtesy car, without no claims protection. 9. Chris Knott. After selecting "new quote" option I gave up after a wait of about 5 minutes. So subject to persuasive new suggestions, the clear winner is no. 2, LV. It is also one of those here which is a Which recommended insurer *PS Got worried that had not tried a comparison site. Tried three. Reg no. Not yet on DVLA so had to select model details. None offered a 335d, except for GT. Game over. |

I think Admiral will be turning away good business thanks to hammering users of an awareness course.
I found ESure, over the years, to be competitive. Not used their claims service though ... |

I have just moved from Privilege to LV. As well as price, the key point for me was no requirement to specify factory-fitted options. Privilege were an utter pain in the arse making me describe every constituent of the option packs in detail. They even asked me to specify the price I paid (not the stand alone price) for each option within the packs, which ended up in a Computer Sez No type conversation.
LV was just below £300 for 18k miles. There was a cheaper quote of c£250 on a comparison site, but not a name I recognise and unsure of their position on options. |

I am with admiral.
Initially when I went through getting the quote I had a UK office ( Cardiff?). Then when I decided to go with admiral and accept quote a few days later I got through to their Canadian office (Toronto ). The UK office wanted not only options but the sub options for things like pro media. Then when I chatted to the lass in Canada, she was like ' it's a car bought to a given spec from BMW' we don't need all your options. Sorted in 5 mins. Also Surrey must be bloody high insurance, I have a Wolverhampton post code and mine is I think around 350, I know for the Mondeo and 330d, we are under £500 with both on business insurance. Also, as mentioned in another thread my xdrive came out around £70 cheaper than I would if I had went Sdrive - I had them quote for both - bizarre but maybe all the safety propaganda kicked out by BMW. In the long ago dim and distant past, had both a cavalier GSI and turbo, using normal companies I was getting caned. Used my wife's catalogue and they put it down as a family saloon and was pretty cheap. They are a law unto themselves |

I've been with direct line for 10years now(9 years no claim discount), recently renewed my policy £499 fully comp for 2 drivers £250 excess, no claim discount protection and legal cost cover. probably could have found slightly cheaper alternative but it was just easier to renew also no questions asked.

If you're eligible, try Adelaide insurance, they do the IAM insurance scheme, along with others.
https://www.adelaideinsurance.com/in...car-insurance/ Note : they specialise in market segments, generally professions, etc. Not in one of those, then I doubt you'll even get a quote. However, I've been with them for a number of years. They are great on the phone, don't jack up the renewal prices to shaft you, and very competitive on price. My premium is about £230. |

While I am with Admiral for the cars, they refused to insure me for house / contents, as I am in an at risk flood area on their system.
Due to fact I am close to a canal and a stream runs through the woods about 1/4 mile away. Apparently this place has never flooded but new rules means close to water source means either refusal of cover or extortionate premiums. I feel sorry for anyone actually living in an area that is likely to flood, if they can get cover, it's likely to be crazy prices. I did get cover from somewhere else, this actually came in cheaper with them using common sense and not just a computer. |

Quote:
AVIVA On line quote did not offer the right car(so specified GT version instead). Offer of "replace with new" in first 12 mths is not credible for a well specified car: it only applies if new car with same options is available in UK; otherwise they fall back on market value. They do offer the triple guarantee that I had enjoyed with More Than: claims do not cause loss of NCB, I increase in premium or refusal of cover. But with this, quote comes out st £464. So LV it is. |

It's worth extra for peace of mind and knowing you get decent customer support (in proper English). As a standard these days, I always ask where their call desks and customer support is located. Changed from BT mainly due to crap support. |
