BMW M Performance LSD Arrives for 335i and 435i. Pricing and Technical FAQ.
BIMMERPOST NEWS BMW M Performance LSD Arrives for F30, F32, F22. Pricing and Technical FAQ. M Performance Limited Slip Differential now in stock May 8, 2014 Aftersales Business Development and Marketing is pleased to announce the return of the Limited Slip differential to select BMW vehicles! Designed and created due to popular demand, the mechanical Limited Slip Differential provides the extra performance advantage that true performance drivers desire. This differential utilizes 3 clutch plates for a total of 30% lockup on acceleration and 9% lockup on deceleration. This lockup provides instant power to the wheel that has the greatest amount of grip to gain better traction out of tight corners. An additional benefit in low-grip situations is that both wheels get equal power, meaning more forward driving force on roads with reduced traction. Product Highlights / Benefits: • Full replacement differential, no modification of existing differential necessary • 30% lockup on acceleration, 9% on deceleration, developed specifically for the F2X and F3X chassis for optimal traction and smooth locking and unlocking characteristics. • Integrates seamlessly with the vehicles’ DSC system, no coding necessary • Better traction in inclement weather • Superior warranty coverage • 4 Year / 50K miles when purchased with a new vehicle • 2 years or the balance of the new vehicle warranty, whichever is greater • Adheres to rigorous BMW Group test standards • MSRP pricing $2,895 (2 Series F22 M235i) • MSRP pricing $2,995 (335i (F30) / 435i (F32)) • Can be port-installed eventually, but not currently. Due to the high install time and anticipated high demand, the first units have to be dealer installed. Technical FAQ: |

When I took a 335 for a test drive i hit the gas pretty hard turning out of the dealership driveway and all I got was a horrible smearing feel of the e-diff braking the inner wheel and killing the power into the turn. I'm used to driving a high-powered RWD vehicle with a real LSD, so I wasn't expecting this and it was a huge negative for the car. Will this unit fix that or is this more for track-oriented driving?

On our Switzerland pricelist it is listed for $ 4290.- (Swiss Franc 3800.-)
(including our low 8% VAT. Installation not included) Which is a plus of $ 1300.- or about 40% of the US MSRP. That's how we get ripped of with BMW M Performance parts, just 300 miles away from BMW Munich HQ Question: This package includes the differential covering box? So replacing means, complete original differential box out, new one in, done?! |

It's obvious that with DSC and anti-spin active the car has that reactions, but you can push and hold that little button...!!! So if you compare EDL and LSD, the latter wins hands down |

Turning off DSC every time you want to power into a corner does not seem like a workable solutions for everyday driving

It definitely seems to me that this should have been a standard feature on the higher end 3/4 series cars. I know that there are a million threads complaining about LSDs but making you pay for the original open diff plus the LSD plus installation is absurd. In comparison, Audi will sell you a factory installed electromechanical clutch rear diff for only $1100 for an S4.

S4s never big like that. The Supra I had in 85ish had LSD......standard. BMW price is laughable. I would feel stupid paying that. They must laugh every time they sell one. Embarrassing IMO.

When you consider what Genuine BMW M Performance parts cost, $3k for their LSD is very reasonable. After all, mirror caps are over $600, and a MPE muffler is $1500!
Don't forget the value of the warranty... A significant value add for those of us still in their vehicle's warranty period.

Anyone see or know of any reason why this is only for the 335/435 and not the 328/428? Looking at the part numbers for the stock pumpkin, the part is identical. Final drives are identical. Is it just marketing that BMW is advertising this just for the N55?
Thoughts? |

LSDs aren't like tie rods or some other simple to make part. There is a variety of ways of making them. A Google search turns up plenty of different designs. While there are plenty of heated arguments over the merits of one type vs. another, clutch types are often used for high performance vehicles.
As for prices (for BMW) I've seen them range from $1500 (Quaife) to $10,000 for custom made race ready LSDs. The e46 M3 LSD wasn't this expensive but then again, this LSD is likely different. To start with, it's new so you'll always get burned on price if you don't have patience. As for the eLSDs in all 3-series, while not exactly a true LSD, it sure beats the open diff of years past. It was always a real surprise to come out of a turn with 50% and one wheel drive. It's now 70-80% power and still one wheel drive (~sigh) but it does make a difference. Side note: On a test of competing cars I thought some makers had used a marshmallow instead of a diff. If you want to really make a difference in the way the car performs, drop plans for the big muffler, cold air intake, downpipe, muffler delete, or other engine add-ons. Just spend the money on a real LSD. You won't kill your engine, the environment, or some other critical component at an early age and the car will truly perform a lot better. A good Diff really does make a 'diff'erence. |
