Oil Change at 1,500??

Was reading the article below and wondered if any of you guys (not those that leased their car) considered changing the oil at 1,500 for this reason? Does it carry any weight?

"Do you still have to “break in” a new vehicle today?
In a word, no. Lubricants and engine oil have come a long way, compared to the products of old; they protect metal parts much better than their predecessors. In addition, the steel and aluminum used for engine parts come from the factory already conditioned and treated, thus ready to run.
The only caveat comes with that first oil change. Make sure you change your new car's oil and filter for the first time at 1500 miles unless otherwise recommended by the manufacturer. The reason? Metal has worn off while mating surfaces were established, and those metal scraps need to be removed from the engine before they cause long-term damage."

I'll be talking to the dealer about this on Friday when I go in. I wanted it changed at 1500, but I'll be somewhere on I-95, so I want them to do it now at just under 1,000.

If you do the first change at 7,500 that will more than sufficient. You could also change the filter at 3,750 for good measure. Since the filter sits right on top it's a super easy change.

I've read this before. Personally I'm not worried because the rest of the car will fall apart before the engine does from extend OCI wear.

That statement is BS or written by someone who has no knowledge on the subject. Not to mention the fact that it's totally counter to the previous statements in the excerpt.

If you're really worried about it (no reason to be) change the filter. Motors are dry run at the factory before shipping so they actually are broken in already. I don't even believe that they use break-in oil anymore.

No need to do this anymore. Countless members have had their oil analyzed at even 10k initial miles and the oil was still fine.

I'm really anal about oil. Even if the dealer won't do it, I'm gonna have it done.

Was about to mention the same thing.
Second part contradicts what was just said.

Yup. Had my E46 for 12 years, 120k miles. Oil changes once a year, every 10k. Most everything else broke under the hood except the actual engine parts lubricated by the oil. If I'd kept the car I'm confident the engine would've easily exceeded 200k without needing any work (rings, pistons, etc).

I did a few UOA's early on and they were always fine, so I just said screw it and stopped worrying about early oil changes many years ago.

It's all preference.

I changed the oil on my GTI at 1k, dealer did one at 3k for some reason, and then I did it again at 5k (dealer uses Castrol which is fine but I prefer Mobil 1) and every 5k since plus a change after every 3-4 track days. Of course, it's a track car, tuned, and DD, driven much harder than a normal DD. It has 18k miles on it and has had....... 8 oil changes. LOL

Is it NEEDED to change it out after "break in"? Based on most information from the OEMs not really. Will it HURT anything? No, of course not, so who cares what other people do. If it makes you feel better do it, if you plan to keep your car until it falls apart why not? Even if it only extends maximum life by 200 miles, it's 200 miles.

The dealer I go to is more than okay with performing in-between oil changes since I pay for them. I think I got my first one done at ~8000km which is ~5000 miles.

They don't reset my counter so then my once per year oil is still covered by BMW.

My 2013 F31 has a 30,000km/2 year OCI. Screw that for a joke. I got my oil changed (at my cost) at 15,000km/9 months which is just a smidgen under 10,000 miles. That took a lot of mental restraint on my part to trust the condition-based electronics, especially since I'm accustomed to full synthetic oil changes every 10,000km or less.

A key consideration for the longer OCI is the volume of oil circulating in my N55 engine. I understand it is close to 7 litres, whereas my previous cars would hold roughly half the amount.

If it makes you feel better, change it. Otherwise it's not necessary.
