Car Running idle for 2 hours!!!

OH dear.. someone please shoot me,

i went to the movies with my Girlfriend yesterday, and left my car on the basement parking. Set the gear on P, and went on to open the passenger's door. Walked away and locked my car.

Long story short, when i came back i noticed my idrive was displaying my reverse sensors and the DRLs where on!! so i got in and much to my despair, there it was, my rpm at 600 and everything still running.. even the music

My Girlfriend must have thought i was having a heart attack due to the apparent seizure i was having. the A/C was no longer working, only blowing hot air into the cabin, and my fuel tank was 1/4 less than what i had left it with.

Damn the devil to hell...

So i drove off, shut off my aircon and turned it on again, voila! it worked. and to my relief my engine was running fine, nothing overheated, nothing blew up. There was just this harsh sound of my head banging on the steering wheel... How could i be so stupid?

Im posting this so that you guys can learn from my stupidity and check that the engine is off everytime you walk away.

As for me.. well im thinking of ripping my exhaust off so my stupid ear can hear the engine running. OR! just get an uglier Girlfriend so i dont get distracted when i walk off.

When you are ready to turn off the car, put it in P, press the Start/Stop to turn off the engine, let go of brake, press Start/Stop again to turn off car.

Way to stop that to happen again: Don`t buy automatic again! I always put my car in 1st when it`s turn off so if you forget the engine running you`ll notice pretty quickly.

Buy a diesel. It's safe to say you won't walk away and not know the engine's running.

That's weird. I put the car in P and went out to get my kid out of the car. When I was back in the driver seat it was stopped and the display says sth like key out of the car.

Did that once too, but only 15 minutes or so while getting lunch. Now I always double check. I wish the alarm made a different sound when armed while the engine is running.

If only that was true I've done it in the F11 but thankfully only for a short period of time.

Did this with my 328i in a service station. Only when I looked back to admire it, I noticed the DRL's were on, which indicated the engine was still running!
Nobody saw my embarrassment

I thought if you stop the car with everything running, press the stop button once, that leaves the drl and radio running but engine off. With comfort access once you lock the car that kills everything else. My drls switch off immediately after opening the door on my way out

Tough lesson, but more importantly, a lesson to all those who aren't use to the auto. I don't think any harm was done, but don't make it a habit..

Potentially dangerous if car was left in a closed residential garage and running for 2 hours.

Do you have CA? With all the smarts in these new cars I cannot imagine why it wouldn't know the driver was not in the car for 2 hours.

How is this even possible?

I hardly ever turn off with the start/stop button. My car ASSes off when in park and ignition shuts down when I lock with key fob.

However this is happening to people, it is potentially lethal. The shutdown requirements are somewhat crazy. Something needs to be thought through over again. I think it has to do with Auto Start/Stop. There seems to be a sequence of shutdown events that ends with locking the car that nevertheless leaves AutoStart/Stop ready to fire up the engine again. Somebody needs to figure out what that sequence is, and fix it. Another total puzzlement to me: if Auto Start/Stop is enabled, why is the engine idling for two hours in Park and unattended? Isn't the point of Auto Start/Stop to cut down on idling????

The car does not car if the fob is with the car to keep running and similarly will run without a driver in the seat (perhaps the car was left running to keep the passenger warm, etc.).

If you turn the car off while it is in drive it will put itself into park.

If you have the park in M/S mode the gear shift will move automatically back to the right if you turn the car off while in drive.
