I later found out that Nissan had known about a bearing problem from a supplier, but also knew that it would not fail until out of warranty. Nice!
This was a few years after a Stanza XE had blown a head gasket at 30k.
I traded the Maxima in for a new 99 V6 Passat 5MT and drove that for 16 years until I bought the 16 340.
I will NEVER buy another Nissan/Infinity or any other junk they produce. Ever. For any reason.

I am sorry to hear. I also did have the issue with the input shaft bearing and I took care of it at 130K. The car died due to a rear end with a 160K and never had any other issues.
I have blow many VW 02J (Manual transmission if you did not know) mated to high output 9A engines (VWs 16V 2.0L) and I still do not call VW garbage.
You must have gotten really lucky with you B5 Passat because they were far from bullet proof. I still own VW despite all the issues I have had. My A5 GLI has been pretty much trouble free to my own standards.
BMW will give you issues so be ready.
