The standard warranty is 4 years or 50k miles and the CPO warranty is an additional year with unlimited miles.

So if you buy an almost new CPO BMW and drive it a lot and hit 50k miles at year 2 does your last year of warranty coverage start at that point or do you get 3 more years of warranty with unlimited miles?

I drive about 25k mile a year so if I bought a 1 year old CPO and the later scenario was true I could get 100k miles of driving in under warranty.

It'll be a total of 5 years / unlimited miles since 1st Initial sale or production date.

CPO coverage begins as soon as original factory coverage ends.

How can a warrantied car be sold without a warranty? CPO warranty is now 5 years/unlimited miles from the original in-service date. Previously it was 6/75 for CPO or 5/75 for CPO Elite. So YES--by definition--a CPO can be sold with less than a year left on the warranty.

If you used up your factory warranty in 2 years,you would get 1 more year. The CPO warranty starts after the factory warranty ends. However long it takes.

At no point would you get 3 more years of warranty. The CPO is one year after the factory warranty.

Correct.

One could theoretically blow through their Factory Warranty and CPO in slightly over a year after delivery based on 500 miles a day for the first 100 days of ownership.

As also noted elsewhere, the CPO is nowhere as inclusive as the Factory Warranty and there is a deductible for each covered incident (not per visit) and minimal diagnostic reimbursement (which can be a real killer).

If a car was traded in with no warranty because over 50k or over 4 years old. The one year CPO would start when you bought the car. At no time would you have less then a year warranty. If it’s CPO,you would have a year.

This is not a CPo then it's a third party warranty. Once a car's original factory warranty expires it's impossible to CPO it.

Say it was a 13 that was built in november of 2012 and put in service presumably in early 2013. That was more than 5 years ago. A somewhat local dealer is selling a CPO that is along those lines.

If today you are buying a car that went in service more than 5 years ago, then it's not BMW CPO eligible.

If it's not a BMW factory backed CPO, then I don't know how any of us can answer your question. We know what BMW CPO warranties say; we don't know what a 3d party warranty says. I don't know what "along those lines" means. Read the warranty is all I can say.

While I have not had the experience on a BMW, I bought a VW with 69,000 miles on it. Well out of factory warranty. It was certified for 2 years. I have never heard that a car can’t be certified after the factory warranty. Can you please tell us where you received that information?

From every BMW dealer I have ever spoken to. BMW warranty is like virginity once it's gone you cannot get it back. If you buy a CPO car w 65k on it then it was certified before the original warranty expired.

You can get an aftermarket warranty but once the car is out of warranty bmw won't touch it.

There is a difference in a BMW EW, also known in this instance as a BMW CPO for a 1 year term, and the many other EW programs for various lengths offered by many other Companies.

Each Company makes their own rules about what they will and will not cover.

A Dealer can technically sell a car with any EW Company they choose. It does not have to be with BMW, however I don’t think they could technically call it a BMW CPO.

I did a search on cars.com for certified 3 series and 4 series. Within 250 miles from me. I found 3 cars with over 50,000 miles listed as certified. 5 series 2 more.

I called the dealer and talked to the service department and they said it went into service on 6/12/13 and the CPO warranty will expire 6/12/19. So it's certainly possible to buy a CPO car and have it come with less than a year left on the warranty.

Correct.

The BMW rules are they will CPO a car with up to 60,000 miles on it as long as it has the proper service records and passes CPO Inspection.

FWIW, that is a car already covered by an existing CPO, which is entirely different than a new CPO.

I texted my salesman. A CPO traded in can be recertified to go over that 50,000 or so miles.
