Engine sounds like a Diesel

I have a 2013 F30 328i xDrive with 24,000 miles and my engine sound looks like more and more like a diesel.

Do you experience the same ?
Is it worth going to dealer for checking ?

My wife has a 2015 and engine sound is completely different

thanks

I also have a 2013 and have driven 2014 and 15s as loaners and can say that they are definitely different. First off, the engine sound in the 2015 is pumped in via the speakers. This makes the engine sound more like a 6 cyl from the inside. The 2013 doesn't have any such artificial sound enhancement, so all you hear is that puny little 2.0 4 cyl. From the outside I believe they sound similar. The 2015 sounds a little more smooth, and you notice this when you use the auto-start-stop feature. When the 2013 auto-starts, it's a little rough and shakes the car a bit. When the 2015 auto-starts, it's much more smooth. I think they just did some refining of the engine as years went by.

Maybe the '13/'14 MYs...but my '15 doesn't sound that bad...certainly not diesel-like.

I have a '15 and it sounds like a diesel......

Oh, wait.......

Seriously, it's the sound DI engines make, just stop complaining about it and enjoy the better fuel economy and power from such a system. I mean, you can only really hear it at idle anyway.

Put an exhaust on it and you'll forget about the engine sound.

All this time I thought my '13 was a diesel. I guess I should start putting in regular gas

Does this have to do with the timing chain since there has been a redesign?

I'm afraid that would be a major threadjack. LOL Although I guess the main question was answered.......

They are both imperfect in different ways. S3 is way more fun in corners, suspension is just better, chassis stiffer......but the turbo lag makes corners frustrating and stop and go traffic maddening.

The S4's SC'd V6 puts power down instantly (like snap your neck power) and there is more of it, but there's more car too.....4000lbs of it, cornering is fun for spirited driving but try to push it and the nose heavy oversteer rears it's head. Manageable but still feels 'sloppy' in turns compared to the S3.

I still smile everytime I drive either, and both are way better than what they replaced (S4 replced a Q5, S3 replaced a Stg 2 Mk6 GTI) but Suffice to say I await lease end and am hoping the TTRS comes over here and satisfy my needs.

Yes, BMW's implementation of DI sounds diesel-y. However, post #6 does not explain why the OP hears a difference between his 2013 and his wife's 2015. Nor does it explain why his car is sounding more and more like a diesel.

I am genuinely curious about whether or not this is an issue related to the redesigned timing chain. Or perhaps it's a software change.

OP, are you noting differences in the car, or with outside with the hood open? As mentioned, inside the car could be due to the active sound design in the 2015.

This sounds like a case of the dreaded "lifter-tick" that is common with this motor. Here is an article that goes into it:

Will exhaust change engine sound? or just increase exhaust more than engine sound to ignore it.

The difference is 2 more cylinders and a whole lot of stuff to make you go faster and stop quicker, there you go now go out and get one, you know it makes sense
