Sometimes I regret getting the M Sport over Sport. The Sport cars look a little bit better this time around, IMO.

The new BMW F30 factory production line video !

The first thing i noticed was...soon ...humans are no longer necessary !
And what we all now...as the global economic crisis =What i call... new era !
Why....??? no people at work=no jobs=no money !
No money...who is going to buy BMW's !
So...what i call...the new era....this system is going to strangle himself !
I can see it also at my work....40 machines = 1 person !
i don't want to be negative...but i think...it's the reality !

Now I know why I have orange peel in my paint job!
Good thing the BMW emblem is still put on by hand. Wouldn't want that upside down.

Very good clip.

Sick automation.
In the whole video, as little humans that there were, no one said one word. Very sterile enviroment.

Someone has to design, engineer, produce, and install the robots. Just saying.

it takes fewer people to make the robots than to make the cars. overall, automation leads to lower employment.

You have to do European Delivery (or not, and just travel) and take the BMW factory tour. Seeing those Kuka robots working is mesmerizing! It's very impressive. The people on the production line are doing basically two things: tasks that take too much dexterous complexity or cognitive skill for robots to do, and troubleshooting the production line if something fails spec along the way.

I'm not making a political statement here. It's just something to see these robots moving. Sometimes it is really eerily human-like.

Worthless answer. Looking for real information here with respect to weight, strength, etc.

Yep--I thought that was probably just for the cameras. Especially the little swipe of a buffing towel after application.

As opposed to assembly lines in other countries, where one may find the workers eating hamburgers, smoking, sleeping, etc. Reminds me of a story a long time ago about Brian Bosworth, the football phenomenon who flamed out. He said he had a summer job at a GM assembly plant. He and his buddies would tape a nut or screw on a string to an inside body panel to create a ticking noise that would drive the future owner nuts. The owner would then take the car back to the dealership and the mechanics would have to practically disassemble the car to find the source of the noise. Go GM!

I thought the same thing--very very human-like in the way they open and close the doors and hood for access, and in how they maneuver inside the car while spraying. It's also pretty funny how the robots are wearing protective covers/jumpsuits just like a person in a paint booth.

Great video, thanks for posting!

In the mid 1990's, I spent a few weeks installing a procurement system at a major automaker's factory. First thing, I had a stand-off with union workers that did not want me to physically carry in my company's equipment -- to which after a hastily-called team of five union representatives and two management types did they relent that since it was a different company's equipment, it was okay. (and that after ten minutes of debating, I slipped aside and took in two pieces anyhow before they noticed). But, I digress...

Anyhow, they made a unique part sold in all General Motor's vehicles. The shift was 9:00 am to 5:00 pm. Their quota, though, was filled by 11:00 am. So they would do mostly nothing until 11:30 am, then go to lunch. They came back at 12:15 pm, and did mostly nothing until 4:30 pm. Then they would start working again until 5:30 pm, and claim thirty minute's overtime. On Friday, they would get credit for the two hours of overtime, and depart at 3:00 pm.

And that is exactly why automakers want a robot.

I totally agree. The economic model we depend on is quickly becoming outdated. No workers needed, no money injected into system to necessitate the robots, things go boom! Along with the deflationary spiral of tech and why we've had negative real rates (in the short end) for almost 5 years now. Things are changing, they always do, evolve or die

Yea, unfortunately many times there is a massive disconnect with the workers and the company they work for. Nobody benefits from stuff like that.

And about the story of the string and a nut rattling in the door. How about putting a nut in a compartment of the frame before it's welded up. And we wonder why the NA auto companies are in such bad shape.
