Ah ok, well as I said it depends on your driving. My long term average is pretty much 37-38MPG, but most of my commute is A-roads/roundabouts up and across the Welsh valleys.

Any journey with a significant motorway journey and I struggle to get it below 42 (even with traffic) and a leisurely run in Eco pro will get me 50+. A particularly dull run from Newport to Swindon got me 59.5 MPG (no significant inclines, warm day, and 65MPH on the cruise)

Your car sounds within the norms (as much as you'd like it to be higher), I'd look at it in the same way as the rest of the diesel crew on here, goes like the proverbial off a shovel and you don't have to hold back due to the cost of the fuel - and if it does improve (and becomes less nun-like as Teaston so eloquently put it) then all the better!

I just bought a diesel for the torque, thing is as much as I don't really care about MPG.. It does help, like one of the things that put me off a Mustang was it does 18 MPG if you're lucky..

But I'd never buy a 250 + HP car with economy in mind, it's really just a benefit not a primary concern..

I wasn't trying to reignite any petrol/debates

Just reminding the poster that 38mpg for this level of performance is a perk and certainly not worth worrying about!

Neither was I, the fuel type is irrelevant.. It goes for all performance cars, decent fuel economy is awesome, I'd never say no to more..

But I bought a performance car for a reason, to have fun with it.. If a 335D gives me 30MPG (which a Focus ST would) so be it.. It's still a 300+ HP car and I expect it to be thirsty and to give me many smiles..

38MPG is pretty awesome for a 250+ HP car.. I had an Alfa 159 2.4 JTDM (210HP) that did around 33MPG.

Actually if I got 40MPG out of it, I'd be a little dissapointed and / or get my foot checked out ..

Thanks for the input everyone, yeah I didn't get it expecting the worlds best mpg, mine just seemed a little low compared to others.
Then again, on the 10 mile trip I just did I could only manage 23mpg, he he.

I was getting my horn fixed again yesterday and picked up some brochures...

I was comparing a 40i with a 30d and noticed the new ones have lower mpg claims and higher CO2 than my 2014 330d. About 2.5mpg less combined on the newer motors...

Is this the price of Euro6?

I believe it is because they now rate the M Sport with it's wider wheels and aero separately to the SE.

Good thought as these both certainly have an effect. However, the brochure quotes 225/45/R18 tyres in the same column.

My line of thought was along the lines of getting better NOX burn for Euro6 may have reduced the overall efficiency for the given testing regime. What effect this has on real driving I couldn't guess...

The 30d is available in Luxury and MSport. So, I'd assume the numbers are for the best case and probably mixed models... But, if they have been real in their number generation... The 40i only appears available in MSport for the uk market. However, do they test local specification vehicles for each market? I'd doubt it...

If the diesel is really less efficient now, we all should petition to bring back NTG!

42.5MPG over 22K miles, with fairly regular trips to Germany. MPG will drop below 40 if you cruise at 100+ (obviously).
