Looks to me like 4 Series sales are gaining momentum in Canada: http://www.goodcarbadcar.net/2013/11...sa-canada.html . I do think that in Canada in particular there's both room and need for a harder-edged AWD model on the high end to compete with the coming M-B C450 coupe and a new Audi S5.

Interesting. Average monthly sales in Canada have grown from 182 in 2013 to 289 in 2014 and 359 this year.
I haven't driven my 435xi coupe that much, but it does seem to be an impressive luxury-performance car. Not a sports car, and not exactly nimble, but an impressive vehicle nonetheless. Surprisingly fast, in an effortless way and I've never had it above 4,000 rpm. I'm still driving around with a/c off and window open, listening to the exhaust burble on gear changes. 2,200 rpm seems to resonate. Novelty hasn't worn off yet. |

I think that the last 3 series sports car was my E46 M3: when it was introduced it could hang with a 911 S. Maybe that's an overstatement as both the E92 M3 and the F32 could/can hang with a garden variety 911. But I see the 911 - and more recent M3s - as entry level GT cars.
And I think entry level AWD GT cars is where the high end coupe market is headed (in more northerly climes). What does the 435i xDrive need to qualify? To my mind: 1. Better suspension and tires. 2. Better steering feel. 3. More refinement in the interior, especially storage space. 4. A little more power over and above the MPPK. But overall this is a pretty good package. |
