A KEYLESS Drive in My 328i
ok... weird situation I am not happy about.
Scenario. Go for a drive with my wife. On our way home I get a block from the house and wife says she needs to run to the teaching supply store (gag)... so I drive to our home and I get out and she takes my car to the store. About 15 minutes later I get a call from my wife. Honey, can you come pick me up? I say: Uh, why?... She says: "Well I don't have a key to your car and I'm in the parking lot and I can't start your car!!!" I cannot believe it let her drive 12 miles without stopping the car or at least telling her there was no key in the car so she could turn around and grab my key! Anyway. I'm not happy about this. I think the car should know the key isn't there and it should give a visual and audible alarm that the key isn't there to the driver. So... I hopped in her car and drove to her location and dropped off the key to my car... lame. Thoughts? |

My E92 gives a visual warning if the key leaves the vehicle while the engine is ON.
F30s don't warn you that the key isn't in the car? ..Why would they remove this functionality? I'd be willing to bet there was a warning on iDrive.

it does say the keys isn't in the proximity...
you wife, just like anybody's wife, wasn't paying attention.... and you as a husband, just like any woman's husband, forgot that you had your keys in your pants... Engineers can't solve all the problems of the world... the question you should ask is: what was your wife doing for 12 miles not looking at the instrument panel ??

you definitely have. i walked into a gas station, less than 20 feet to the entrance and my friend was in the car. he said the iDrive told him key malfunction or something because I kept the key with me while it was running.

Same with me. It shows a message when the key is not in the car and you drive off.

What about the second key FOB? Where was that? In her other purse?

i guess the point is, even if it did have an audible warning, wtf is the car still running for? i remember even in older infinitis, the warning says "key not detected , car will shut off"

imagine the improbable case where you throw out the window your key fob... the car will suddenly stop on the third lane on the freeway.... it's definitely safer to allow the car to continue until the driver intend to stop... Remember, i prefer the driver to be in control, rather than the machine. Darwin and all....

Simply becuase it is the better option. There are plenty of scenarios where the fob becomes lost, battery fails, whatever - with the engine running it is better for the car to get you where you need to go then to die and leave you stuck.

the car will not shut off immediately and slam on the brakes and engage the e-brake lol but it should shut off when you are at a stop when you are far enough from the key. if the key fob is losing battery you can put your key into the ignition.
if it was the case that the car didn't stop due to safety i could jump in your car and drive it until i get it to where i want to strip it. |

Hmm. Audible/visual alarm ignored completely. LOL! This is precisely why I drive my wife's X5 a minimum of once per week. It allows me to skip the "how long has it been doing _____________" question which would usually only be responded to with a) "I don't know" or b) "I didn't notice it".

Rant mode - ON: So the real solution is to never have designed it in the first place. I question the need for technology that doesn't really add value to my life, like keyless drive. I've never had a problem having to use a key to start my car. It's so simple and elegant, I've never said, "Man, how cumbersome to have to turn a key to start my car." When push button start come around, it too was more of a "gee whiz" gimmick than anything truly useful. But it looks cool. In my 135i instead of inserting a key and turning it, instead I insert a fob, then push a button to start. Gee, wow, great. It didn't improve my driving experience, at all. Sure, she could have looked at the dash to see the warning. But, key-less is supposed to be more "convenient", not less so. Why doesn't the system simply NOT allow the driver to shift into gear if there is no "key" in the proper vicinity? That there would have prevented what happened. The tech gods, they giveth and they taketh away. End rant. Man, I do sound like an old fuddy duddy. Now where did I put those 8 tracks and LP's? Last edited by RPM90; 07-02-2012 at 08:13 PM.. |

But, the trans could easily be locked out if the car is in "park" and the key goes our of range. It would also help in preventing someone from stealing your car, if the driver stupidly left it running and went into a store, "just for a second". |
