Purchase high mileage 328i. Am i Crazy?
After nearly 6 months of stalking the used market all over the country, I finally found my ideal ride!
'13 328i M Sport, Blue/beige and loaded, Cold Weather, Premium, Lighting, Nav, tech. My hesitation is that is has 58k miles. No warranty whatsoever, being sold at a dealer. It's well under my original budget. It'll be paid for in 3 years, plan to hold onto it at least 6 years. I currently drive 12-15k miles/ year. I'll reiterate that the blue/beige is very rare. The Blue/black is a dime/dozen but just can't get excited about black. Am I crazy to get into my first Bimmer with that kind of mileage? Thanks! |

You'll find that a lot of people in these forums swear by their rule that they'll never buy a BMW out of warranty. I on the other hand am 1 week out of warranty with 69,000km and am not nervous at all. Can something major happen? Yes. But there are also well documented cars out there that have had zero issues.
You'd be playing the lottery, you could win or you could lose. The important thing is if you're going to worry about it everyday, don't get it. If you'll be fine and just go with the flow, then buy it |

58k is not high miles. I have driven an e90 325i 185,000 miles. Take care of the car, expect repairs, but you won't be disappointed in the reliability. How many times has my car left me stranded due to a breakdown... Once (when the water pump went).

I'm one of those people who wouldn't buy out of warranty. However, 58k miles isn't that high. So long as you have $$ set aside for maintenance and are willing to risk it, by all means! However, I'd look into a CPO car and see if that fits your budget.

I wouldn't buy one out of warranty, but I do have a 2013 328i myself that has 72,000 miles on it now. I put all those miles on it, and I haven't had any issues. Just be sure to find a mechanic who will replace differential fluids so your AWD system doesn't grind away or crack one day. That happened to a friend after he was refused time after time by the dealer saying they wouldn't change it since it's a "lifetime fluid", he was also out of warranty...

58k is definitely not high. Mine is a January 2013 F31 320d with 73k miles and I will be out of warranty come February 2017. I don't think mine is particularly high.
I can't say I've had a single issue (other than the total f**k up by taking my car to an indie tyre shop - scratched tyres and a €300 bill to repair a completely buggered up balance and alignment). I say go for it!

You're not crazy, but you're definitely rolling the dice. These cars can do plenty of miles, but I wouldn't do it without an extended warranty and a close relationship with a good mechanic (unless you like to do your own wrenching).

I'd be buying this car sight unseen and shipping it so trying to gather all the info I can from a distance. |

As others have said, 58K miles is fine; the engines go 200K miles easily. The car will need some maintenance (probably cooling system, certainly suspension, probably some other stuff.) starting at 100K miles or before. The electronic stuff (nav, tech) are going to be expensive if they break. Mike Miller (BMWCCA's tech columnist) favorite quote is: "BMWs are expensive to buy, expensive to maintain, and I wouldn't buy a modern one without warranty." My 335d has been out of warranty for 3 years, and I have spent some $$$ on it. But I love getting up to 40 mpg and love the power/torque, and usually the ride. |

In the meantime since I started this thread requesting service records, etc and the build spec from the dealer I've been made aware that the car is actually CPO despite the absence of the info on the ad seen on Cars.com!
That may just have clinched it! |

Use a good independent mechanic who specializes in BMW's and you'll be fine. The only problem I've ever had was my water pump went out on my e46, these cars will go forever as long as you keep up on your maintenance.

I wouldnt be concerned if you were talking about the previous gen naturally aspirated 328i. if its in good shape, i say go for it but make sure you have money set aside in case anything goes wrong.

The shop also told me that if the dealer doesn't agree to the inspection, to just walk away. More sound advice! German Motorworks in Duluth, Ga |

Congratulations on finding your perfect match. Based on my long-term experiences with not only the F30 328 and BMWs in general, I'd buy the car you're talking about if: - you get a pre-purchase inspection by a reputible indy BMW mechanic - the car has a clean history (no accidents or major repairs) Also, get an extended warranty if you can. Here are some shops in your area that work on BMWs. There are a couple with strong reviews. Good luck! Once you have it, we want pictures! https://www.yelp.com/search?find_des...inneapolis,+MN |
