Have you tried 19" winter tires?

Hey

I'm thinking of using the stock OEM 442 wheels for winters and get a more aggressive summer setup. The car would be 435i xdrive gran coupe hence I'm thinking going 19s for winter with xdrive should be okay?

Original tires are:
F: 225/40/19
R: 255/35/19

Are 19s typically not recommended for winters? Someone said that the lack of sidewall on the rear will impact braking?

We actually have quite a few customers who run our 19" wheels for winter. Primarily, from the F8X community.

The "ideal" winter setup includes a narrower wheel setup (to "cut" through rain/snow) and a taller sidewall for wheel protection (smaller diameter wheel). That being said, I haven't had any complaints from our 19" winter wheel/tire customers. Though, this may vary depending on what your local conditions call for.

So does have 19" winters impact braking by making it worse? It would still be better than 19"s and all seasons right?

Heavier.... wheels and tires makes braking harder simple physics.

Yes, it would still be better than running All Seasons. The only reason why I'd see it be harder to brake is (as mentioned above) increased weight.

Tires are more expensive and more sensitive to potholes with 19".
I have 19's with the sottozero's for winter tires, they are RFT's, which all suck by nature, but the tire is great in the winter.
Thinking about switching to 18's to put a bigger tire on though. The car would be way more comfortable ride wise.
Ride quality suffers with 19" rims, there is no give with the low-pro RFT's, they're kind of harsh really.
Something to think about.
Looks Vs. Comfort.
I don't notice any issues with breaking on the 19's versus 18's.

I drove a buddies M3 with 19" Dunlop winter sport 3D tires in the snow. Drove fine. He was very happy with his purchase. He found a used set of BMW factory rims for a good price.

Nokian Hakka R2s are now available in 225/40R19 and 255/35R19 which are fantastic winter tires. I run them on my 18" winters and ran Hakka R (previous gen) on my old car in 245/40R19 and had no issues with ride quality.

Figured I'll add this question here to not create a new thread:

I have coming in a few weeks the 2016 335 GT M sport with the staggered summers. 225/45/19 front and 255/40/19 rear. I'll need to buy a set of winters within 2 weeks upon delivery. Question is can I put 225/45/19's all around for my winter setup. Plus I'll save a little bit of money going with a smaller rear.

Thanks guys/gals

Staggered style 598 wheels for 3 GT:
F: 8x19" ET30, 225/45-19
R: 9x19" ET42, 255/40-19

The rear 9x19" wheel is too wide for 225/45-19, at least not recommended from the tire manufacturer.

235/45-19 square might be an alternative, 245/40-19 or 245/45-19 are other options.

Well it's not that simple! If it would be true what you are writing, a light summer tire wheel would have shorter brake distance on snow, than a heavier winter tire wheel. Which as we know, is not true. So there are other factors that are important.

If you compare a 205/60/16 with a 225/45/18 summer or winter setup, the 225 setup (with same tire type) will normally have shorter brake distance on dry, wet and snow road surface.
Even if the complete wheel setup of the 225 is heavier.

If you compare car with 15kg normal tire street wheel and a 16kg race tire (slick) wheel with same dimension. What car do you think has shorter brake distance on dry road?
