Collision warning
Morning all, without crashing into another car, object or pedestrian is there any way of seeing if the system is working. I've been driving the car for a few days and nothing has happened to indicate that the system is working. I'm satisfied that the ACC works as the orange car illuminates on the dash and HUD and goes red and applies the brakes but nothing for driver assist.

One way is if you have large empty cardboard boxes and try driving into them (so that they don't damage the car)

Not sure with ACC, but if all you had was the Collision Warning, all it does is illuminate the centre car if it detects a possibility of a collision and prime the brakes if necessary. It DOES NOT auto brake for you, as it is just a warning system without ACC.
One of the main reasons I didn't sought after a car with the Driver Assistance package (Canadian Package) - (Blind Spot/Lane Departure Warning/Collision Warning/Surround View/HBA) |

At low speeds, the car will auto-brake, if it thinks you won't. At highway speeds, there is a loud audible beep, warning you that the car ahead is braking fast. (Why BMW thinks the 3-series can't have highway auto-brake is anybody's guess.) |

Also thinking about it, there should be a setting under settings for collision warning being set to early, medium, late, if it's late you probably won't see it until your close. It's also possible the system was deactivated

Mine activated today at around 60mph on the motorway. The bleeps went off and I only tapped my brake pedal and they slammed on, and remained on even when I lifted my foot - the poor car behind got a bit of a shock.

The system, my '15 with ACC system at least, only works on moving objects, it has to "lock on" to a moving vehicle in front of it, after which time, it will space itself accordingly, or stop if that vehicle stops, etc.
If a vehicle pulls out in front of you, the car on the dash will turn red, it'll beep and it'll brake. Sometimes the car in front will slow down faster than it anticipates and again, it'll do it. Doesn't make a difference in my experience if I'm going slow or fast, seems to work fine in both cases. It doesn't work for parked cars or stationary objects. Thinking about it, it would go crazy on any turn because the radar doesn't "curve" to the actual path of the car, so it would reflect off objects that aren't really in the car's path. Also, I don't think testing it with a cardboard box is going to have good results, lol. |

The 3 series does pick up 3 points based on Driver Assistance Plus. Apparently autonomous braking did kick in during tests but I haven't seen it in mine when inching in traffic. |
