788M Fronts Rubbing

Anyone elses F30 on M2 wheels and Tyres 437m or 788m on M Sport Suspension?

Fronts 245/35/19 Et 29 9" (Judder/Hop on Full lock)

Rears 265/35/19 Et 40 10" (Seems fine with no rubbing)

I'm not sure what exactly is catching it's happening in reverse only on full lock with the turned in tyre juddering when it happens: Appears to be the front most inner fender liner or part of chassis/frame, plenty of space between strut and nothing visibly touching inspecting the wheel from outside while it happens.

As it happens so infrequently it's not possible to see any rubbing.

Any suggestions for pinpointing what this is, have had the wheels off multiple times for spacers. 12mm spacer prevent it but the feel and stance is undesirable.

Any advise appreciated.

I had 437s that did not rub at all, m sport and lowered. I used 235/40/19 for the fronts though...

OK if I do my math right...
The stock wheel is a 225/45-18 with an offset of 34

With your 235/45-19 tire and an offset of 29...

Offset - you have the tire +5mm outward.
Spacer - with a spacer you are +12mm outward (+17mm)
Tire - with a 245/35 size you are another +9mm (+26mm)

Or in short... your tire is almost a full inch farther out at +26mm outward.
Pull the wheel off and you should see some pretty apparent tire rub. My guess it's the metal inside of the fender which is why you don't spot it so easily.

We check this by running masking tape along the inside of the fender. Where it rubs is where we roll the fender just a little more (when we roll the fender outward).

Also note, the newer BMWs... the wheels don't camber or tilt in like they do on the older cars. The motion is more up/down versus the nice tilt/arc.


My simple suggestion is to try using a 10mm or 5mm spacer up front versus the 12.

Or just live with the rubbing.

Thanks guys, I'll get the masking tape out. I doubt it's the outside fenders catching on the inside as there appears to be plenty of clearance when the wheel is turned full lock, although i'll double check this.

My thoughts were the front most inner chassis. I've tried 3 and 6mm spacers also and the rubbing is lessened, but still there. With 12mm spacers while the metal/judder rubbing is removed there is slight rubbing on the front liner although the plastic could easily be heated and moulded, but the stance or poke seems far too much, and the handling wasn't great.

I've a couple of plastic ramps I'll check if rubbing can be spotted on full lock on the inside with the front wheels up on the ramps.

There are members running 255/35/19 fronts without issue, so I'm puzzled as to why you are rubbing.

Although the link above has a 235/40/19, the pics show where interference usually occurs on f3x's. usually the outer tire shoulder is rubbing the front fenderwell liner. A spacer would worsen rub in this situation, but with yours it remedies wherever yours is rubbing, very puzzled.

I'd stumbled on the 1st thread before and another member with 788's reporting no rubbing. I notice he'd lowered also. The 2nd forum appears to be 8.5J with same/similar tyre sizes. I'll avoid absolute lock until I can investigate the cause.

One of the struts is leaking heavily so I'll possibly be looking at coilovers or changing struts. With NI roads, potholes and bumps the m sport suspensions seemed a good balance of comfort and handling. I'm not sure where to go here between B14, B8's or alternatives to Bilstein.

I'm at the dealers next week for the egr recall so I'll ask if they can include a fitted quote (M sport strut priced at £315) and hopefully a note for catastrophic failure of the strut. I'd just submitted a claim for previous alloy damage.

if Bilstein, i would stick with only the twin tubed B4's(OEM replacement). the monotube Bilstein's such as B14, B6, B8 have high internal pressures and are known to be firmer and rougher than Koni. both companies will have nays and yays but personally on F3/4 series, i rather(and do) have Koni SA(red), or Sport(yellow) if you want the damper more performance oriented.

I'll go for the b4s I didn't know that was as close an option to OEM for the m sports.

On further inspection I'm no further in finding any potential rub spots. I even had the steering wheel ratcheted to full lock 😂 and there doesn't look to be any spots where anything could be making contact.

What about the rear fenderwell, liner and inner well and also top of tire? I somehow think the leaking strut is contributing to the problem, by sagging or compressing more than spec under load, idk.

I'll have another look at this when I can. I've a couple of jobs lined up for after it goes in for egr replacement under recall (Gearbox oil & filterpan sitting, B4's still to arrive). It's so infrequent I can live with it without the spacers for now. From what I've read I think it could be a wheel flex/scrub issue.

Hoping to get a stage1 - reason for getting egr recall done beforehand and servicing the ZF8. Wasn't expecting to need shocks too, so remap may need to wait 🙄
