340i vs. Model 3
So for about the same price the model 3 more or less matches the performance of a 340i, at least from 0-60. Was hoping for better value for the money, I guess you save a little on fuel, because model 3 doesn't get free super charging and you eventually have to replace the battery. I think I'll keep my 340i then.

The main advantage to the 340 is that you can get one.

Current delivery time is 12 to 18 months for the Tesla. I sat in a Model 3 and it felt like an inexpensive minimalist car with a thin economy airline seat....Decided to get an F32 instead.

Go sit in a Tesla or drive one, get over the initial "Shock and awe" of the drivetrain and you'll find a product that's subpar. I haven't been in an M3 yet...been in an S of various trims, underdamped, sloppy suspensions, terrible build quality...no thx

Pros:
-Carpool lane (this alone is worth it) - Great mid range and low-end power. Look up the quarter-mile times and you'll see they are nearly as fast as the 340 (manual - won't depreciate like a rock compared to the BMW - you would single-handedly be saving the environment Cons: - no manual transmission - it will be forever till you get one delivered. - what everybody else says about the car including the fact it looks like a messed up model S. |

Anyone who expects a Tesla to have the overall performance (including handling, not just straight-line) and quality of a BMW is delusional. That, aside from the fact that the Tesla looks like the old GM Saturn and is probably built like one as well. No free "supercharging", and looking at Tesla's map of supercharging locations, most are in shopping centers or other well-off-the-highway locations. Good luck taking a cross-country trip and needing a charge around rush-hour.
BMW's i-Vision concept is a better benchmark for what an EV should be, with a 375-mile range as standard equipment. But the charging infrastructure is going to be the key to the success of the EV for more than daily commuting and short trips. My next car will likely be a 2020 M340i - make sure you have your Model 3's doors securely locked when I pass you, lest they get blown off.

I was pretty skeptical about Teslas in general and the Model 3 in particular until I drove one. Down low it is slightly faster than a stock 340i with great low and mid-range power. They complete the quarter mile in essentially the same time most places I've seen (13.3 seconds). The Tesla doesn't handle as well as the BMW, but it feels planted and was fun to drive.
Would I trade my current car for one? No. Is it a good replacement for people who want an electric and don't plan on modding their 340i anyway? Yes.

Forget the model 3, I'd take a 340 over a model S as well. They look good for an electric car, and I'm sure they can be fun to drive on some level, but I just can't get excited over their line up.

Going to list some things others haven't mentioned...
Pros (can be subjective): - The massive glass roof - Use your phone as a key Neutral: - Closest you'll get to autonomous driving for a while - but if you want performance and like driving, I don't think this matters - Minimalistic interior with a relatively big display Cons: - Small trunk when you don't consider the space underneath the trunk floor (and not including the "frunk" capacity); I really wish they'd made this as a hatch like the Model S - I wouldn't mind losing the single piece glass roof for a hatch - 90% of your controls are from the only screen in the car - not very intuitive if you ask me - Boring exterior IMO; my wife's IONIQ looks nicer than a Model 3

I'll consider a Model 3 when it has an engine that sounds like a 340
