Is the F30 a flop?
Today, I was at a local Boston dealer to pay for my MY12 ZSL 335i that I am picking up next month in Munich.
There wasn't an F30 in the showroom. There wasn't an F30 in the demonstrator parking lot. There wasn't an F30 among the cars on display outside the store. Last week I was at this dealer's Boston store; they had two F30s. Both were original launch vehicles (with the bulbous front plate holders). Neither was in the showroom. Both were buried behind rows of other cars and didn't look like they'd been driven in some time. Plus, it's been several months now and I haven't seen an F30 anywhere on the road around where I live in suburban Boston. I realize the big sellers here are the xDrive models (though I think that's a waste of gas and weight). And, when I bought my MY06 330i, I didn't see many E90s the first year, though they became ubiquitous about a year later. So, what do you think? Is the F30 a bomb? Or am I just in an F30 wasteland (which is fine by me. I'd much rather be the only one with one around here. And my RWD model pretty much assures that anyway.) |

Maybe it has to do with MY13 right around the corner and those two launch vehicles are the only MY12's they'll have????
Here in the Los Angeles area I'm seeing more and more F30's on the road. I haven't checked out my local dealer lately so I don't know how inventories are for MY12's. At least I haven't seen my color yet (Imperial Blue) and I'm still getting the occasional stare by folks checking out the car. |

I've been told by my local dealership they are actually not selling well based on typical sales of new body launches. Maybe not enough mainstream advertising? Either way, I pick up my ED Msport 335 shortly and can't wait.

I just leased a 335i actually and there were only 30 new ones left in the entire US at the time of signing. They are sold out until 2013s arrive. The GM of the dealer got the car from another dealer and had to give the dealer with the 335i a car off his lot in addition to buying the 335i at whatever dealers pay for the car.

I suspected that was gonna be the case. Didn't they drop that odd wood trim in MY13? I saw a launch Modern line with this and thought, "This will appeal to a German dude who rides the train into Berlin and has a man-bag."

in the bay area there isn't enough inventory at most of the dealers, especially the sports lines. The dealerships didn't order enough of them. Of the ones they have on the lots, they are usually odd spec builds. In areas like Chicago and I suspect the NE, most are xdrive sales so dealerships haven't fully uptaken the f30 like you'll probably see in the fall.

Not much stock here either. The logic has to be that either the cars are in fact selling well, or they aren't making enough cars to go around. The 2012 year was not a full production year either. The reason those initial cars sit is because they are fully loaded $55000 vehicles given to each dealer and the market for a $55000 328 is limited.

Did you order Speed Limit Info? Does it actually read the speed limit signs, which as you know, can be pretty small in some parts of MA. |

I test drove a ZSL F30 335i in February at the dealer. The sales guy and I were tearing up the roads in MetroWest (I think I scared him a little). To be honest, in that short drive I didn't notice some of the stuff people keep whining about here, like the steering. I was too blown away by how competent the car felt -- and how much better the ride on the RFTs were compared to my E90. It's great to hear that you love your F30 after owning an E90. I am betting I'll have the same experience. |

Lots of 3-series sold here in the Boston area are xDrives.

I've been keeping my eyes peeled for one here in Tampa. The only place I've seen them is at the local dealership. At the time they had maybe a half dozen or so.

MY 2012 was just way too short of an introduction cycle. I think 2013, we'll start seeing them commonplace like we do for all bmw 3er historically.

I've got 3-4 that I see at the train station every morning here and a bunch on the road. But then again I can WALK to the BMW dealership in 10min from my house... So some may have been test drives.
Starting to see a fair number around downtown Toronto too. And yes, everyone mistakes mine for a 5er at first glance.

Yea, the F30 is virtually nonexistent here in New England.
I've only seen 1 on the road since February. One local dealership only has two on the lot and they've been sitting there for 3 months. Dealerships are definitely waiting for the xdrives. But also, I think the bad economy and the higher prices for BMW do play some effect on its sales. It's hard to buy a new car when you don't know of you'll have your job tomorrow. |
