Should I?
I am considering to get my car detailed on Monday 8th by Liquid in Knigtsbridge. They do Veryon's etc. He checked my car out today after washing it beautifully and said a clay and polish would do wonders. Is claying the paintwork a good thing? Car has no scratches or swirl marks just a few impurities in the paint due to London grime.

Claying isn't a bad thing if done properly, then needs a decent couple of lays of wax to help protect.
If you run your fingers over the paintwork you can feel some fallout, claying helps remove this. |

Yes, can feel that in places. Liquid said they need the car for about 6 hours. I'll do it to remove the impurities. Will this be a slippery slope of continuous claying and polishing? Never had this done to any of my cars. I'm a novice.

Even a car straight from the dealer should be clayed. On the back of a trailer, it picks up all kinds of impurities and dirt that you will miss by washing.
Claying is not something you need to do regularly, only before polishing and waxing/sealing a car. So you are probably looking at doing it every 3-6 months if your car needs a re-wax/seal. Did Liquid say they would use Gloss It or Zaino as a seal? |

You have nothing to be worried about. Claying/waxing/sealing will only bring out the best in your car. And the only way you'll end up on that slippery slope is if you get addicted to the results.
Here's a little tip. Find someone who smokes and slip the cellophane off their ciggie packet. Put two fingers inside the cellophane and feel your paintwork. You can't do this with just your fingers but with the cellophane large areas will feel like a Braille dictionary. Then try this trick again when your man has done his thing |

So the claying will help lots of blind smokers with a fetish to touch cars up?

Claying is always a good thing but it takes time to do it right. The results can be quite remarkable depending on how "gritty" the surface paint is.

I was just a tad worried that the claying might remove the clear coat.

Only if you don't use enough lube and you are using quite an aggressive clay, a soft clay which is the more typical kind available used with some lube will not mar the paint, however if you are claying the chances are your next stage will be polishing which would remove any clay marks anyway
Claying a car can only be a good thing as it removes surface debris and contaminants, should be done once or twice a year depending on mileage and where you leave your car As has been said feel your paint especially horizontal panels like bonnet, roof and boot after you've washed it with your fingers inside a thin plastic bag, if it doesn't feel glass smooth it needs claying. My brand new car needed doing put it that way, the roof felt like sandpaper so god knows where the car had been stored as it only had 7 miles on it when I collected |

I've clayed a few times, check the edge of the clay after you have rubbed part of the car, if your clay is a light colour you can see the dirt starting to build up, you should fold the clay every few wipes.
Try it yourself, its not that hard.....if you have the time that is. It cant be cheap getting someone in Knightsbridge to detail your car?

Says the man who's buying an M5! ..... Pot, kettle ......
Anyway, it's only money. Knightsbridge is expensive and Mayfair even more so, but then it's all about what one has got used to. The Detailing will cost £150 which I think is GVFM. I'll give it in next Monday. Got up late today and felt bloody lazy.

Yes, pretty GVFM and he's super fussy. Mind you, £150 is only to do the paintwork + wheels and nothing else. 5-6 hour job.
