Actually, I agree - you said it better than I did. If BMW is claiming ~350HP out of the B58 initially, seems like it would be easy for them to get it to 400 or 425 HP.

Looks like the new B58 engine will be making about 340hp for the 340i and 440i.

It also sounds like the the B48 engine will get a bump in horsepower for the 320i model from 184hp to 192hp and for the 330i model, which replaces the 328i, I'm guessing a hp bump of 250hp with the same B48engine or it sounds like they are going to keep the hp for the B48 at 192hp and incorporate the electric motor from the i3 to make total power around the 250hp range. I think BMW might be looking to make all future 3-Series models with the electric motor from the i3 to complement the gasoline engine. Production may be starting in November 2015 for these new 330i/430i's and 340i/440i's. No matter what happens I can see the efficiency of future 3 and 4 series models increasing. My guess will be at least by another 15%.

It also sounds like the next generation 7-Series (G11 and G12) will get the new B58 engines too along with a host of other engine offerings. Check it out.

If BMW don't develop something 'better' than an M6, how long until the end of V8 and V12 engines all together...? Be a real shame if i6 (whilst stunning) becomes the biggest displacement engine in the lineup.

I doubt the 330i will have less than the 273-odd BHP which the last 330i had (that would just be weird), so that would leave room for a 325 or 28i with something in between 192 and 275 BHP so around the 230 mark - that would be my guess.

The N20 is based on BMW's N-series engine modular design, so while the configuration (4-cylinders) is new, the modular design on which it is based, is not. My interpretation is that the N20 was a stop-gap engine. BMW had to move away from the N52/N53 because its fuel economy and practical performance (read, low-end torque) were being outdone by competitors.

What's the difference between B and N?

Better specific output capability, lower emissions and better fuel economy. That I am aware of, BMW are not introducing any significant new technologies with this engine. Rather, it is an evolutionary step forward. I'm sure if I'm wrong about that one, someone will be along to correct me shortly
This makes sense...

This was my first thought as well... I would be surprised if the b58 has a significant power bump based on how the N55 will apparently still be leveraged. This is reminding me of how the N54 was still utilized in the 335is and 1M after the release of the N55... makes me wonder if the N55 will soon be romanticized a bit like the N54 : )

My thoughts too.

If that report above is true and the new B58 will have 340hp that doesn't make me feel too bad though since I have the MPPK. Now if a B58 MPPK comes out that boosts hp in the 370 range...........

Oh well 3 years will go by fast and I plan on my next car being an M3 anyway.

in due time 340i will be the entry level engine, and there might be a 345i or 350i

I doubt this will be the case. There will always be a demand for smaller/less power engines so that it can serve as the 'entry' model. I don't think that a ~300hp motor would ever become the entry model lol.

Haha that could only happen in the states... 340i will be 145bhp, whereas Europe will just stick to calling it the 318i

B58 are the new I3 engines, very intresting engines imo, at least for EU.
Correct me If i'm wrong.
N55 is the M engine which is in the F80.

Isn't that S55 which is heavily changed?

So weird.. I still will own my real 330i (because it's all the things I love about BMW.. N/A I6, 6spd, RWD) but maybe I will pick up a "new" 330i? Lol

"What cars do you own?"

"330i and 330i"

Haha

Why is this not the case for the 328i? There was a 328i, naturally aspirated inline 6 long before there was a 330i (E36 vs. E46).

BMW is moving your cheese and they will continue to do so. Get used to it.

That would be the S55. Not just an upgraded N55.

But that actually designated the engine size!

It was a 2.8l I6 (engine code M52b28) then came the M54b30 in the 330i.

Gosh I miss the days where even the engine codes with "b20, b25, b28, b32) made sense. And then their was "Tu" before the "bXX" to signal a technical update.
