Rust in Seat Base ?

I've just taken deliver of a new 320d - my first BMW and first new car.

I found an interesting issue - there was rust in the hinges of the sports seats. Spoke to the dealer, they too were surprised, and are having the seat bases replaced.

Not a good thing to see, but there must be some piece of mind knowing there was no dicking around and you're getting your seat base replaced.

Welcome to the club, even though it's not ideal I'm sure you'll enjoy driving the car in the years ahead.

Just checked my car and I've got some rust in the hinges as well, but it's not as bad as yours. However, I found a fair bit under the seat.

Will be talking to the dealership tomorrow, but won't be able to take the car in until Monday .....

I'm not complaining at all.

I noticed an issue, let the dealer now, they said they hadn't seen it before and have agreed without any quibble to resolve it.

Quite exemplary service from my perspective, and a response that will enhance their reputation and brand.

Agreed, The rust is bad and unexpected from a new car but it's how they remedy the situation that shows their service

Yeah, both of those look bad. Interested to know what the outcome is, so keep us posted.

Checked my car this morning, a little rust on one hinge, the other is coated in black paint, no rust. But more rust found under the seat.

Looks like this is gonna be a common problem for SA build f30s?

Finally have some good news to report. After a few phone calls and emails, BMW Australia have agreed to replace the seats with new ones.

Yeh, not happy to see rust in a 3 week old car, but am pleased with the end result. This is the level of service and support you expect from a premium car company.

Thats good service you'd expect from BMW. I'm bringing in my car to my dealer tomorrow for assessment.

So I must have misunderstood what BMW Australia had told me this morning. They are now going to clean my seats rather than replace them.

They deem it is not going to spread or get any worse. I just don't like the idea of the seats being taken apart. Hope everyone else affected has better luck in getting new seats ......

Hmmm... that's not the best outcome on a brand spanking new car. I hope it doesn't spread, not real sure how that works anyway. Did you speak with your dealer or with BMW Aus directly?

Both, spoke with the dealer first who then reported it BMW Australia, who told me it's not going to happen, and put me back to the dealer.

Maybe someone from BMW Australia is reading this thread

I picked up my vehicle today after dropping it off to get the seat bases replaced (they had to be brought in from somewhere). Oh no Sir, we didnt replace the seat bases, we cleaned and treated them.

Sir asks why, they said they checked (I assume with BMW Australia) and that cleaning and treating will sort it out. On enquiry they confirmed it was a lifetime warranty if the issue arises in the future.

So not so happy any longer about change in proposed treatment.

I wonder if it's a bigger problem that just one or two vehicles ?

While I have to agree that it's not ideal, for what it's worth BMW is pretty good with this sort of thing and knowing that if it ever became a problem you could get it sorted. I'd probably ask for the lifetime warranty in writing still for extra peace of mind.

When I brought my car in last Friday, the dealer checked all their floor stock f30s, they all have the same rust! So I guess its not just a one or two cars thing.

They're contacting the factory on what to do.

F20 was found that there are many rusts inside the vents. Not sure if F30 also affected!

Now both F30 and F20 found rusts in seat base and also inside the ac vents. You can see lots of owners' pictures here.
