Probably not for too long. The F30 has just started it's run. The DIYs are piling up. If someone can retrofit Bi-Xeon lamps, folding mirrors are definitely possible,

Yes indeed. That's how mine works.

Straight out from the dealership:

You can have the mirror fold and unfold via the little button on the driver's door. (Period).
If folded and the car locked, when you unlock the car, the mirrors unfolds automatically.
Once in the car and stationary, if you decide to have the mirror folded, then when you take off, the mirrors will automatically unfold themselves when you reach the speed of 20mph.

Via (backdoor) code (as i have done with my car) (Thanks to Frogman):
you can set that you fold and unfold the mirrors with your keyfob.
With this added functionality (which is standard for cars outside of the US),
if you fold the mirror via the button inside the car, then lock the car,
when you unlock the car, the mirrors wont unfold, it will only unfold if you push the inside button again or drive above the speed of 20mph. (as member Vitoco has pointed out below)
Everything else above stays true.

I hope i was able to clarify a bit more for you, if not once and for all.
So with standard US setting, you fold your mirrors to park near a wall, but when you return to your car and unlock it... Dong.. your mirrors gets wrecked on the wall..!! What a dumb way to set it in the factory!!!

Why? If they fold every time that's wearing out the motors! When I park at home (ok I have a wide driveway) I don't need them folded and again on quiet road I won't fold them. I probably fold them 50% of the time or less. It's nice to have the option of holding the button for a second to fold or not if you don't need to, saving motor wear!

What if you have CA that doesn't require fob interactions?

You didn't read what he said about it. If you fold them from within car they won't unfold unless you press the inside button or drive away.

No he didn't, he actually said from the dealership you can (only) fold them from inside the car with the button on the door. Then he said if the car is locked, they will unfold as soon as you unlock the car!!! But I think you are probably right as I can't imagine that system being acceptable!

I assume your car is coded to do this? I haven't tested mine yet, but will an uncoded car do this?
