Still working on spec, but 330d Touring X-Drive, with alot of toys!

I'm looking to replace a 2 year old Audi S4 which was £47k, so that kind of budget I guess...
Having just been reading/watching this, I think I'd be keeping the S4

The dealer will usually have an allocation of build slots for various models of cars, these will have certain 'build weeks'. If they dont have any left, then they will need to wait till they get allocated more slots.. thats how some customers who have ordered later than you still get their car first. (as has been said at times certain extras can have supply problems, this can affect waiting time also)
Certainly on the E92 (3 series coupe) the slots were either diesel or petrol.. then you changed it to what ever engine you wished 320/330/335 etc, then added your extras.

There is, just before Easter and the beer is eleven stronger! Hopefully this won't affect the quality control. Possible delays for Touring models due to opening up to US market?

Kudos on the move from Audi btw - you won't regret it.

A few notes on specs (there's loads more - best hit the configurator then ask pointed questions on the forum.
  • Xenons, adaptive lights and high beam assist are all part of the vis pack which is highly rated.
  • side mirrors auto dimming is not standard or part of any pack
  • black panel display comes with prof media or as a separate option.
  • there's a few camps to adaptive suspension and a whole load of confusion of how many mm's the lowering is/isn't specially with x drive - good luck getting definitive answers.
  • enhanced bluetooth - will let you play media through iphone bluetooth link.
  • variable steering - again two camps
  • harmon kardon speakers - are you an audiophile? If not you'll be fine with normals.

Enjoy

It's weird. My first order was end Feb. car was built and at port by 18th March. Will be in UK by 16th April. I can only hope my reorder is as quick.

Was it a 320d? As far more build slots I believe , that's what dealer said

Well the cheaper option to cure being bored of the S4 is to tune it, however, one of the main things annoying me with it is 19.5mpg in the real world in standard tune. While a re-map, and a smaller pulley for the supercharger would be fun, it's not going to do much for the mpg...

On that note, I did have this for the day last week:

I really, really wanted to love it, and would have bought it. But on Yorkshire bumpy B-Roads it was just ususable. Solid suspension, 20" wheels, and wide suspension track did not make for a fun car to drive....

and this, definately put me off!
14.5mpg, yeah it was a test drive, and I wasn't exactly driving with mpg in mind....

The RS4 got me thinking, day to day how fast does a car need to be to enjoy driving it?

So, here I am, seriously considering a 330d touring xDrive, which has 130Nm more torques than an RS4!

A friend who recently got his first BMW having come from a line of hot hatches told me after a week of his e90 330d m sport 'it's really nice to drive at lower speeds as well at higher ones and its got more than enough real world power'. I think that summed up my Audi and bmw experiences. Audi'll go where you point it and v fast but just wasnt enjoyable to drive otherwise.

I wonder if the delays are due to BMW getting ready for the 4 series production

Interesting comments, thanks for posting! An RS4 is a car I would have loved but 14mpg would be tough to live with. I did look at a C63 AMG but the fuel (and tyre) costs put me off. Yes the 330D is fast enough in the real word but the engine doesn't have any character or drama. You can't beat a free-revving performance petrol engine.

I guess. Aren't all the newer performance engines pretty much turbo'd to the hilt though?

I've never had anything more than the 3.2 V6 on my Audi R32 equivalent, but my experience of that wasn't mindblowing - would love something that drank less for about the same or even better acceleration...

Yes but they still rev in a way a diesel never will. With the 330d even when driving it enthusiastically I find it quite boring in nature.

Hello all - ordered my F30 330d MSport at the end of Feb/beginning of March and the delivery date has been brought forward from a vague mid-May to the week commencing 6 May.

Not sure what that indicates except that the 3.0d engine probably isn't the cause of any delays. Fortunately for me I managed to order a spec which didn't include the slow items! Fairly bare, 18" wheels, mineral grey with coral red, business media and heated seats.
