M Sport brake dust color

Odd question, but what color is the brake dust from the M Sport brakes? I'm getting a dust built up in my rims and I notice it on the sides of my car behind the wheels after I wash the car and drive it. It is not the typical black color I have seen from brake dust before. This is a light colored dust, which I would describe as tan colored. What ever it is, it is excessive. (2016 435 GC)

Same here... ///M Brakes leave more dust then non-M brakes. It's normal and your rims will always be dirty...
Enjoy your GC

But my question was regarding the color. Is the dust from M Sport brakes a dried mud or tan color?

Mine is pretty dark, and very abundant. It looks like the regular almost black stuff

No it's not. Just look at the pads if you want to see the color.

The dust is pretty much black.

Wheel dust is typically black since the pad is eating the rotor and in turn wearing itself down.

I know the wheels on my car are black almost all of the time... no matter how often I clean them. It's pretty terrible. The trackday pads I used on my S2000 dusted just as much as the ones on my 335i. LOL

Did you spray tire shine on your tires? I've had issues where the mist from the overspray sticks to the rims, and then it might just be dust accumulating.

Brake dust is a dark grey color. If you make the mistake of putting on silver rims for winter tires, you'll perpetually be swearing at the accumulation of dust.

I might get this stuff. Any tips besides thoroughly cleaning wheels before application?

No, my rims are called anthracite.

BMW pads make a lot more dust than most because the pads are softer than most, so what gets eaten up is the pads, not the rotors.

Get the wheels really clean, because anything left on them will get sealed in. This stuff works so well that when I pulled my wheels for rotation I put it on their insides, and on the hubs and calipers as well, to keep them from rusting/oxidizing. It also works on tailpipe extensions. Carbon build up wipes off with a paper towel, no chisel required.

In doing some research, I understand Canadian and Euro cars come with different pads than US cars and they don't produce the traditional black dust. (I'm not sure if all M Sports would be the same). I am not going to take a wheel off to try to examine the pad colours, but doing a search for the OEM pads, they do look to be a lighter colour. I was only looking for confirmation that the lighter coloured dust accumulating on my wheels and lower panels of the car was in fact brake dust where it is not a colour I'm familiar with from brake dust.

I think I know what you mean. My wheels seem to have spots/areas with some slight tan/light brown on it. I notice it a lot more on my winter wheels since I can't hand wash in the winter.

That's rust stains. Most of what ends up on the wheels is ceramic etc. from the pads, but some some iron from the rotors ends up there too. It rusts and stains the wheels, usually in the joints of the spokes and the rim where moisture collects. Once it's there it can be a real headache to get rid of. If it stains badly enough you can't get it off.

This. Mine is a Canadian car, and the brake dust is really dark grey (not quite black). The anthracite summer rims (like the OP's) hide it beautifully. Didn't show up until the silver winter alloys were on.

But, the metallics will rust in the brake pad dust, which is what you are seeing.

What I'm seeing is definitely not rust. I wish I could get a decent picture of it. Because it is lighter, it's actually showing up more on my dark winter rims.

You're right. Most of it is where the spokes meet the barrel. Thanks for the clarification.

Black/Dark Grey.

I invested in sonax rim shield. I basically buy case packs from Amazon.

I've never used that, I have used what seems similar from Armor All. The Armor All worked, but not great, and it wore off after a few weeks. The Wipe New works much better, has been on my rims since April, it's still working as good today as it did the day after I applied it.
