I think most that do this though haven't got much of a clue and probably haven't given much thought to how stupid it looks.
Before I stated actively following this forum I don't think I even noticed very much but now I seem to see 520d "m" 118i "m" and occasionally X1 "m" cars a fair bit. Makes me cringe now particularly when the car involved is an SE and has almost next to no connection with the m division. May as well stick a wheatabix sticker on the back for the relevance it has. Actually the W on its own would also work. |

The sheer act of ADDING a large M badge to the rear of your car is very different to just leaving small discreet OEM badges on in my opinion.
That size badge is/has never been used to denote trim, only ever model. BMW has never ever had trim badges on the rear end of cars, only ever indicating model i.e. an M badge only ever appears on the rear end if it's a full fat M car or M135i/235i etc.....so there is a difference when it's added to the rear end, because it implies something more than an M Sport, but in fact just looks ridiculous. It doesn't really bother me personally, but surely people wouldn't want others on the road to immediately brand them as tools and instead appreciate their car?? To me it seems it has completely the opposite effect of what the owners think they're achieving by putting the badge on in the first place. To those people who do this, I'd be interested to know what they think of C180 drivers putting AMG badges on the back (the specific badge which is never used to denote trim level by Merc, only ever full fat AMG models). Or alternatively Audi 2.0 tdi drivers putting an S or RS badge on the back, given S Line models only ever have a specific, small S Line badge which is very different to the big S/RS that is is used on those models. |

If you put a big "M" badge on a non proper "M" car;
A. A large percentage of people wont notice or care whether you have a M badge or not. If your car is not bright pink or yellow then your car is oblivious to them, especially with the amount of M Sport BM's on the go now. B. A small percentage of people know about cars and BMW's and know fine well its obviously not a real M car so you look a bit silly. C. A small percentage of people will think nice car regardless of whether it has a M badge or not. D. A very small percentage of people will say look at that w*nker in his BMW, they will say this whether you have a M badge or not. E. You impress the tiniest percentage of people who could actually care whether your car is an M car or not and yet are so stupid they do not realise your 318D is not an M3. Still don't know why some people get worked up about a badge on someone else's car that they will probably never see again in their life. Last edited by saltyamigo; 07-15-2016 at 05:44 AM.. |

It's just a badge...
Yes, us who know more about cars than most will see it and think it's daft but who cares?! I saw a 5 series the other day with the msport stripes in the grille, on the side and it had purple tints to the outer rim of the wheels.. Now THAT looked shite! |

If it's not your car don't worry about it. If you see one with an M Badge on the boot, have a giggle and think how shite that looks and move on. If the owner of the big M badge is happy then so what. Just take comfort that your car looks better than theirs. |

No point debating this. It's just down to personal taste. It's like me trying to explain to my father why white socks and sandals aren't a great look. Or trying to explain to my mate why jogging pants are not really "smart casual" dress for a man in his 40s. Goes in one ear out the other. They are both happy so whatever they want.
So long as someone makes something to stick to a car someone will be there to buy it. I'm not into car modding of any kind. Never have been. Just buy the car whatever it comes with it comes with (ok maybe I ordered the big alloys but only because stock wheels are often under sized as we all know those pesky marketing people trying to make us think the wheels in the ad and brochure are standard). If it has little badges on so be it. If it doesn't I'm not wasting money adding them as I cannot be pestered with that either. If someone else wants to stick bits to their car up to them. As someone else said, 99.9999% of the population if asked to read this thread would not have a first clue what it was about or why it matters to anyone |

Who gives a fuck its only a badge on a car.
Its more worrying to be honest that it would affect the mood of an onlooker to rage about it thinking it somehow affects the standing of their own car in some strange order of cars that theirs is superior than other cars due to it being unbadged. Each to their own, BMW sell it as an M sport so you can maybe see where they got the idea from. People who spend far too much a month on a piece of metal often think these things matter far more than they actually do, most people couldn't give a toss what badge people have on the boot of their car whether it a BMW or a Skoda. |

This'll make you chuckle. Or explode, depending on your personality type.
