I wish more potential F30 customers could see this thread. And this one http://www.f30post.com/forums/showth...ght=wind+noise. This is unacceptable for a $60k car.

There doesnt seen to be a correlation between factory or year of manufacture with the door foam.
How about the lines? Mine is a no line. |

But, with the picture supplied by johnbmw6 as a guide, maybe it's part # 13? Full page is here: http://realoem.com/bmw/showparts.do?...69&hg=51&fg=70 These have part numbers! 13 SOUND INSULATING DOOR FRONT LEFT 51487286655 13 SOUND INSULATING DOOR FRONT RIGHT 51487286656 It doesn't really look right. I can't tell from RealOEM is where it's installed, so I have no idea if it's the right part or not. Last edited by Frogman; 06-17-2013 at 11:46 PM.. |

I looked today and if this is really that big, I'd bet you would have to remove the front quarter panels to install them (or maybe from underneath the car?). Not something that I'd like to attempt myself. If they are in fact missing and should be there, then BMW should cover it under warranty. I've love to know if anyone has this foam installed on a NA F30, or at least a non-diesel one. |

I assume it gets stuffed into the big a$* gap that is already there.

I wonder if most of the foam gets installed on the inside to deaden the sound. I would expect that at least the doors would have to come off to install it. |

The part would refer to the front wings, or something like that. Part 18 is not described in the part listings ! |

In the examples in the showroom, it was only diesel models with the foam piece down the wing edge in the door shut. The examples were all 4-cylinder engines, but included a 328i touring (wagon). Which sort of hints at the additional foam is to reduce engine noise, rather than road noise. HighlandPete |

I've got the Sport f30 with all season tires. I noticed yesterday that the noise is really kind of annoying at 70 mph with the radio low. I've got 6700 miles on it.
Makes me (almost) miss my VW Routan. That was a quiet car! I'm not sure what's gone wrong with the soundproofing or if its a made for the US thing, but my 3 previous bmws - all leased and driven only in Germany - were practically silent. :

Then it would seem it is diesel related.
HighlandPete's observation confirms this. However, this would also mean that the road noise is not coming from the front (engine area, wheel arches), because I have the foam inserts but still excessive road noise. I stand by my initial opinion that there is something wrong with the window seals... The search goes on... |

Our 328i estate built in April is super quiet and seems more so than my son's E90 325i. Worse, it does not have any sealing between the front wing and body and the hole that some have been filling with foam is a gapping hole in ours.
I test drove a 316 and a 320 and all three cars impressed me with the silence of the cabin. |

I wish one of the owners who drive a "noisy" F30 would have a chance to drive the F30 of an owner who says his/her car is quiet. And vice-versa.
I volunteer for such a test. I live in Vista (CA) and I'm in Santa Monica three days a week. Hit me if your car is "quiet" and you're kind enough to give me a ride. This would be an excellent test to see if the cars are indeed different or it's just a super-subjective perception.

I know users are stuffing foam into the voids, to try and quieten the vehicle, but these voids, holes, etc., existed on the E9* range and don't recall the same being said about the noise levels in the E9* models. So do wonder (as has been suggested) is more than the insulation properties that induce the noise levels. Poorly fitted/adjusted door and window seals are notorious for contributing to poor sound insulation. I know my E91 330d had 'holes' to the wheel arch, just as the F30/31, plus thin wheel arch liners, but the car wasn't as noisy as the F30 328i I tried. The F30 had more wind and tyre noise coming through to the cabin. I put it down to tyre type/brand and mirror/window fitting contributing to the issues. HighlandPete |

As my ears becme accustomed to the quieter levels, As i eliminate the noises progresively i can hone in on the source of the remaining issues. I do think that it is the door seals of the other 3 doors that have not been adjusted allowing road noise into the cabin. Ever since delivery i have thought that the fitting of the doors was not 100% flush. I am betting that a tightening of the shut will eliminate the remaining issue i have
