So I'm aware that in sport + mode traction and stability control is in DTC, which means it's dialed back and you could potentially lose it and do a 360 in this mode. My question is what people's experience is with x-drive and sport +, if it is possible (though less likely) to completely lose it if entering a corner too hot, or in wet/snow/ice conditions.

I've taken some good turns with the DTC toggled and the back end of my X-Drive fish tails around turns. It's very noticeable in snow when the function is on and then off.

Very spot on. I wouldn't use DTC on snow/icy surface unless there is some space for the tail to step out a bit.

In Sport+ stability control is still there. It is just dialed down. (Per bmw) I've gotten my rear end to slide, but I can feel the stability control kicking in to straighten me out.

bought my car 2015 335i xdrive Msport Mbrakes about a month ago and finally drove it today due too snow etc... I am amazed at this ZF transmission... I grew up with manual on sports cars but always thought a good automatic would be better and heck yea it is... I don't have paddle shifters yet but don't think I really need them... I had in Sport+ and this thing new what I was going to do before I did... lol.... went from 25 to 65 full throttle in Sport+ and let off the throttle and the tranny just held the gear at 6,000rpm's! Freaked me out at first wasn't expecting that... thought it would upshift right away... moved pretty good... just got my charge pipe and intercooler and getting Mppk in another week or so ....going this route since I have a 5 year warranty... But I can see how Sport+ is definitely for some fun driving... I played a little around with it and it held/ shifted the right gear perfectly for some fun driving...

Oh yea... Sport+ will allow you to drift around corners a little bit... found that out.. ... and yes it can be over powered to spin out if you try hard enough (didn't try and don't plan on it hopefully) .... laws of physics still apply...

The trick is knowing that MDM or DTC will kick in to correct slip angle when you lift off the throttle. I can get the rear end to slide considerably if I do not lift off the throttle. Once I lift the slide is over... even if I don't want it to be.

Good to know. Makes sense I guess this allows you to drift but still have stability control. Pretty cool they thought of that otherwise consistent drifting in this mode might be impossible as you don't know when the computer will kick in. Apparently the only way to truly drift and be left to your own devices is in comfort mode with the soft and body rolling suspension and laggy throttle response, wish you could turn it all the way off in sport +

DSC and DTC seem to often get confused.
DSC is the normal mode (except Sport+) when you start the car.
from the manual:
"Dynamic Stability Control detect for example the following unstable driving conditions:

Fishtailing, which can lead to oversteering.
Loss of traction of the front wheel, which can lead to understeering.
Within the physical limits, the system helps to keep the vehicle on a steady course by reducing engine speed and by applying brakes to the individual wheels."
You will definitely notice the reduction in engine power when driving on loose surfaces (e.g. snow) - but the car is in the most control. Occasionally,the engine will reduce so much power that you'll either be stuck (e.g. snow plowed in while parallel parked) or maybe just not so fun...so, you can press the button once (for less than 10 seconds) until the indicator lights up. You are now in Dynamic Traction Control (DTC) mode. This mode allows more slip but still rather contained. Just practice in an open area. I had my first decent snow (in this particular car - 2016 328iT x-drive, Blizzak Studless snows) and I found it still under control but it definitely will slide out a bit in the corners. No matter what, when it snows - I always test the limits in a safe area. New car, first snow of the year, etc - makes sense to know the limits.

From the manual:
"DTC is a version of the DSC where forward momentum is optimized.

The system ensures maximum headway on special road conditions or loose road surfaces, for example unplowed snowy roads, but with somewhat limited driving stability.

When DTC is activated, the vehicle has maximum traction. Driving stability is limited during acceleration and when driving in curves.

Therefore drive with appropriate caution.

You may find it useful to briefly activate DTC under the following special circumstances:

When driving in slush or on uncleared, snow-covered roads.
When freeing vehicle from deep snow or driving off from loose grounds.
When driving with snow chains."

I just saw some misunderstanding of the modes and how they work so thought I'd add my input. I've had a number of BMW's before and have to admit I haven't tried this one yet in my 328iT (only had it 3K miles) but notice above about the "less than 10 seconds" - well, in all my other BMW's, holding down the button for more than 10 seconds turns off DTC and DSC. I find it interesting that the manual doesn't mention this mode but it is probably a USA-loves-its-lawsuits edit. I'll check next time i drive. If you want to understand the real control of the vehicle (without nannies) - I'd suggest you try it out. I'm kind of curious about it now to see how the Blizzaks and x-drive handle without DTC/DSC.

Let me know if I have anything wrong here and/or if anyone has turned off both DTC/DSC.

FYI, if you like kicking out the tail in snow/ice conditions, just turn DSC completly off or you will chew through a set of brake pads in now time. I went through a set of rear pads in 12k miles. Now I just turn it off...

I did this a lot in my CTS but not this car. (yet) Same concept with the button holding versus pressing...never even thought of trying with this car. NOW I'll have some MORE fun next time it snows!!!

In the CTS, I would just pull a fuse and I was back to RWD for the summer with no errors or unwanted problems down the line. My guess is this car would error the hell out...correct?
