What you saw mid pipe was the centre muffler to control exhaust noise. I don't think there's a secondary cat.

Some exhaust manufacturers are offering straight pipes without the centre muffler.

There is no way in hell I would run my car without a cat. The fine if/when you get caught is eyewatering from my understanding.
