Yeah that is what they told me also, however they said they were instructed by Germany to put a whole new column in mine.. so who knows... just be glad when I finally get it back. its been weeks now :-\\

As I understand it, the lock is simply screwed in, and can be removed from the steering column before it is installed. Perhaps this wasn't the case with yours.

I have been suffering with the steering rack noise problem. Even in stationary mode, the steering makes a noise when I turn slightly left or right. BMW replaced the rack apparently with a new design but the problem seems to have gone worse. Now even the steering turning has become hard. Have escalated again and they are taking the car back for inspection but I am not too hopeful - seems that they will need to change the rack and possibly the column again. Will not let go till they have fixed the problem. My car has done just 2000 KMS.

My 2012 328i has been exhibiting a knocking noise in the steering rack/column when I drive over road irregularities or bumps/dips, and especially when entering driveways, irrespective of how slow. Had the car inspected last week and a new rack and column are on order. Apparently, depending on your VIN they will either replace the rack, the column, or both.

Mine is in the shop now, they are replacing the rack for the clicking sound coming from the rack

What month did you have yours changed out, mine was changed out in April and again May... only been driving it a couple of weeks... but think the noise is slowly coming back (it only appeared after the first 2,000km from new initially)

Hope not though.. glad yours seems to be going ok.. how long have you had yours installed?

The clicking noise is FIXED!.

Dealer didn't want to do it, but thanks to some legitimate comments here, I forced them to put in a PUMA case, and then I got call... BMW engineering told dealer they need to replace the rack.

If you go over big bumps in low speed, you sill get a noise/feeling that your shocks are loose. I do believe that is attributed to the dynamic suspension system and the way the shocks work, since I get that on all 4 wheels,

I have the knocking/clunking noise from the steering rack too. Not too sure if the clicking noise you experienced is the same but do you happen to have the part number of the new rack?

I raised the issue with BMW back in Dec, a few weeks after i bought it. They did not know what caused the issue. The car is going back in this week for the regional tech manager to look at it.

I find the noise extremely annoying and the fact that it has not been fixed after two months is completely unacceptable. If they don't fix it soon, i'm considering returning the car and demanding a refund. Under the new consumer protection laws, a buyer is entitled to a refund if a defect is such that had the buyer known of the issue prior to purchase, the buyer would not have made the purchase (that's definitely the case for me).

Will keep you posted.
How did you go with your steering/rack issue ?
Keen to hear, Cheers

I have to say, the issue is not completely fixed. Noise has changed a bit inthat it is a bit duller and muffled. Its nnot a sharp clicking noise and it can be heard when going slow over large bumps or dips.

I thought mine was completely sorted, I do hear the noise (like you said, very muffled) every now and again, but its liveable (if it doesnt get worse) as the roads where I am are pretty shot.
Have you said any more to BMW about it?

We are all good boys
Some of the poor steering feel has been sorted also. Still not as good as what you expect of a car of this caliber though.

Mine is in being worked on. Have a 320i M Sport loaner presently, what a difference it makes not having that loose/clunking rattle over bumps when driving. Hoping the repair results in as good a steer in mine. It feels more connected too, whether that's imagined or not, I'm unsure.

On a side note, I really liked the M Sport steering wheel in all the photos, but after sitting in front of it, prefer my standard Sportline one, it fits the interior better in my opinion - although I would like the soft feel leather...could get used to that. And I miss the red stitching against the black leather on the seats and wheel too.

Will update once I've got my car back.

Mine is also in the shop. After some haggling they have finally agreed to replace the rack. I was lucky that they have stock of the rack. Only took my car in on wednesday and they are already working on it this arvo. Hopefully the car will be ready for pickup tomorrow.

New here, and have been reviewing this thread as I have the same issue too. Currently the car is at the shop and the service adviser sent an email to BMW for advise.

Any other information can be share so that I can hammer them to get the fix for me in case they turn me down.

Thanks
Gilbert

Went to pick up my car today and noticed the indicator lights did't flash when i unlocked the car.

Walked back into the shop and asked them about it and they advised me its a setting. So i went back to my car to have a play with the setting but coudn't find anything related to it. while i was trying fiddle around with the settings i've noticed the navigation menu has been disabled (greyed out).

At this point I was quite certain they've messed up the software update. So i walked back into shop and told them about the issues. That was already 430pm and the shop closes at 5. They got an engineer out and took the car back in to get it checked out.

I was just checking out cars while they were checking my car out. At 5 they came back to tell me something weird is going on and they will have to leave it till next week to take a further look as the shop was about to close. i was quite upset. but there was nothing i could do i woudn't have taken the car back with those issues.

They gave me another 3 series as a loan car to which i also noticed the clunking noise but its only noticeable when i turn into a drive way real hard. And turning the steering wheel left and right also produces the clunking noise while the car is off. I tried it on a few other cars in the show room while i was looking around and they all produced some form of clunking noise. With i've discovered i dont believe the issue has been fixed completely with the new steering rack.

I dont know if its been fixed on mine as they've taken my car back before i was able to verify it. Going to have to wait till next week to find out provided they dont screw anymore stuff up.

finally got my car back today. Took it out for a test drive, although i cant say the noise is completely gone but it has gotten a lot better and the wheels feels a lot more firmer than before while going over speed bumps. i can only hear a really really light clunking noise while turning right into a drive way REALLY hard. Now i can finally enjoy the car now.

For anyone is also trying to get their dealer to get to the bottom of this, i'd suggest getting them to attach sensors to the steering rack/column to try and locate the source of the noise. Thats exactly what they've done in my case.
