Thanks for the info Claykin, fingers crossed ... my new rack was order last week... fixing this issue will give me a totally perfect car.

My thoughts exactly... initially... but until they fit a rack that rectifies it 100% they probably don't want to excite anyone too much.

This type of issue will not trigger a recall. Expect this to remain just a bulletin and fix available for those customers who complain to their SA.

Yeah I tend to of agreed with you initially.. however my steering issue was no existent when I took deliver of my F30 in October 12, then after about 1,500ks or so, the noise crept up.. now at 5,000 ks it actually appears to be getting louder and more regular.. As it is a steering rack issue.. and potentially worsening with age.. I personally think it could become a recall of some sorts

Curious, what does this noise sound like? Grinding, squeak, thump?

To be honest, when I first heard it, I thought F#$K the front right suspension has died
The noise is like a loud thud I guess you could say, like a muffled metal on metal sound.
Whats weird is that it sometimes makes the sound over a bump and then it wont make the noise over the same bump again at a different speed or steering angle.
If anyone has this issue, they would be fully aware I am guessing... as it sounds nasty when it happens.

I just got mine replaced yesterday and it seems to have corrected the steering knock or rattle noise. The work was completed within the day and thankfully they did not have to do any reprogramming this time. Both the steering rack and column were replaced. It's too early to say if it's a permanent fix, as the noise did not show up until the 1000km mark, but so far the signs are good.

I posted in the main forum but thought to ask here as that thread isnt active.

with the steering in comfort mode the feel is smooth. However in sports mode I notice the steering feels "lumpy" only on small steering changes/inputs.

Just wondering if this is common? I was quite surprised.

It feels like the electric servo is inactive and suddenly wants to kick in when the steering angle turns past a few degrees. A bit of a disconcerting feel. Whilst I like the sports weight and feedback I can do without this feel.

Admittedly I didn't test drive much in sports mode.

I don't consider this a fault yet, just more of a byproduct of BMW wanting to add more feel when feeding in small steering angle changes.

Variable Sports Steering?

I've never experienced what you described CKau, but my first thought was - do you have VSS? Not according to your sig it seems, but maybe you got lucky and they added it with your adaptive suspension.

No i dont have VSS. It's more a subtlety than something really obvious most times. I feel it the most when making slight steering corrections.

If i am the only one, might be to do with the new component introduced in november?

Mine is getting done on the Tuesday after Easter...had the faulty steering diagnosed last week. BMW Sydney called on Monday saying the part was being delivered from Germany this week; I would maybe chase up your dealer.
