And anyway, my S4 had the same fuel capacity as my 335, and did 200 miles between fill ups. Now that's worth moaning about - the 335 does more than double, and is nicer, quicker faster etc etc...!
So I guess it all comes down to what you're comparing too.. Highland Pete thinks it's fine as he remembers cars that did half the mpg, as your previous car did. Lots of us are coming from smaller engined diesels where we are used to getting 500 miles+

Also BMW have to compete with fwd competitors that have more interior room in the back, the smaller tank surely frees up a bit of rear space!

Yes, but what I meant was, I've never been to Scotland or north of Milton Keynes and so I meant I thought there would be somewhere in the journey where you can go from 50 to 100pc cheaply rather than say 10 to 100pc

Nope, those motorways go all the way!

I think you should borrow that Huracan and take it up there to the north, because that's where all the decent driving roads are. Wasted anywhere south of Milton Keyes and East of Swindon!

+1

It's an eye opener for people down south when they get to drive in likes of Wales, North yorkshire, borders, Scotland

Both A & B roads can be stunning.

Are they any B roads down south or are they just too posh for them?

Not sure what the problem is. Got less miles per tank from my last car, A8 4.2 V8, and at £130 per fill up!
And 220 miles per 60 litre tank in an Rx8 I had.
And these are good compared to an e60 M5!

The problem with down south is that you have : Motorways, dual carraigeways, urban roads, some A roads, and lots of country lanes. All are too busy to be enjoyed as a drivers road.
Most country lanes are too narrow to be driven quickly or you're likely to take out a fat middle-aged born again cyclist.

So good B-roads are generally lacking, and the A roads are way too busy.

There is a good road from Aylesbury to Towcester, but then some twat decided that they'd put hashed lines all the way along it as too many bikers were killing themselves.

I think there are some nice sweeping roads in Sussex and Hampshire but again can be too busy to get a decent drive in.

As has been touched upon in a couple of comments here, let's not forget the old days, when performance was low, maintenance was high, reliability was often low and handling could be vague.

We might forget the cosseted life we lead with modern BMWs - they are very powerful regardless of engine size, many can do close to or less than 5s to 60, and will potentially do up to 20,000 miles between services and are by and large very reliable, plus fuel economy is probably the best of all manufacturers relative to capacities and power output. The experience, on a whole these days, is really very impressive. Naturally though, we (humans in general) always want more, but that drives us to excel even further, so in 5 years, our current excellent stats will probably seem mediocre!

Hah the Huracan was more of an investment, we are selling it soon after we get it, meant to be here by end of the year but we shall see, might fall in love and keep it

Easy 20-30,000 mark up for someone who doesn't want to wait a year

But ye you have a point, no good driving roads here, need to go 'hertfordshire' like Jeremy Clarkson

My comment was a bit tongue in cheek, as you probably guessed, but reality is, we are expecting much more these days than us 'older ones' grew up with.

BTW, I've run VW 1.9TDI diesel B5 Passats where coming up from Wiltshire I would fill in Wootton Bassett, make the 490 mile onward trip and still have 2/3 of a tank remaining on a good day.

Your comment on filling and brimming each time, I'm not that obsessive, only brim and calculate mpg when it suits, but record all interim fills (how ever much added) and keep a spread sheet for calculating specific brimmed periods and running long term averages.

That 'allows me' for example, to fill at Wootton Bassett and break for a top up "for cheaper fuel" at the Old Inn Shell station near Cumbernauld (off the M80). The trip back last week, my range was telling me I'd get home without a top up, but without much in reserve. Range, even in the 535i, rose to almost 500 miles by the time I hit the M6, not bad for the F11.

I topped my car up on the M1, and drove (via ferry at Hull) through Europe to Switzerland without thinking of re-fuelling. Pretty sure the projected range was way over 1000 kms.

Size of tank, combined with great cruising economy of my 430D, not an issue to me.

Yep, sDrive 30d are quite remarkable.....my average tank range according to Road Trip app is 591 miles, and I have a couple around the 658 mile mark. Nothing to complain about there for a 300hp car.

If ever I'm caught short and have to use a motorway services (avoided like the plague) then I literally splash and dash putting maybe 4-5 litres in. Using the Road trip app is great as you mark that as 'unfilled tank' and it ignores the entry until you do the next 'filled tank'. It then averages the two.
