To anyone thinking about tires.. I would DEFINITELY recommend calling or texting Keith!
Glad I did (though, waited a bit too long) and will be using him and them again in the spring when I swap out of my runflats~

Hi - I'd like to put 16" wheels on my snow tire set up for a 2016 328i xDrive wagon. Will a set of take off OEM E90 16" (type 268) wheels clear the brakes? The offset of 31mm appears to be okay, and I'll be reusing the F30 lug bolts.

The car has the stock brakes.

And I assume I need new TPMS for the F30

Thx!

The specs look good to me. Although, we do not test fit OEM wheels, so I cannot make any guarantees. I would recommend you check with the dealer or test fit the wheels yourself.
Sorry I could not be more help.

Hi Keith,
Haven't noticed you thread before pulled a trigger on 255/45/R17's Sottozeros W210 RFT's for my 2014 328d xdrive.
Love the tire, they are much quieter than stock 19" potenzas S001's, and ride quality and handling is very nice.

What is drawback of going with 255's, in your opinion?
To be honest I just went for the deal, same tires in 225 size would have cost me twice as much (supply and demand I guess).
My rational also was that car sees dry asphalt or wet slush 97% of the time in winter, and Pirelli's are rated very well for these conditions.

If you do not deal with deep snow/slush, there really is not much of a draw back. The wider tire does not carve through the deeper snow/slush as well as a narrower tire. Although it will still perform well. For dry roads, you will have the advantage in your favor with the wider tires.

Hi Keith-

I have a (new to me) 2014 328d xDrive with the M-Sport package. My all-season tires are Goodyear 225/45ZR18 on the M wheels (I think I have the "blue" brakes people talk about). Pic attached...

Which of the following would you recommend (both on different factory BMW wheels with TPMS)?

Nexen Winguard Sport
235/40R18
(on 2009 3-series sport wheels)

Pirelli Sottozero Winter 210
225/45R17
(on 7-spoke BMW wheels)

Similar price and minimal wear on both.

Thanks,
Mike

PS- I live in northern Utah. They plow, but I occasionally have to drive on neighborhood roads (or even the interstate) with several inches of snow if the plows are busy (e.g. it's snowing really hard). Thanks!

PPS- Will the speedometer calibrate itself automatically (for the slightly smaller winter tires)?

Hi Keith, I've seen a lot of reviews that suggest Nokian Hakkapeliitta is the best, or certainly among the best winter tires available. I'm curious if you agree, and why is this tire not available on tirerack.com?

I just emailed Keith and got the following email back from Tire Rack: "Keith is no longer with The Tire Rack. If you need immediate assistance, please contact customer service at customerservice@tirerack.com". It would appear Keith has moved on.

Keith,

I've got 4 x 18" 400M alloys to mount winter tyres to, staggered 8j fronts and 8.5j rears.

Would 225 45 R18's fit nicely all around ? Or am I better off getting different tyres for the rear ?

Cheers!

When shopping for winter tires, it's best to find a tire that fits your specific needs. Much like when shopping for summer tires, some people are most concerned with getting the highest performance possible and nothing else matters. While others realize they do not need the "race" performance and would rather have a touring tire that will provide better ride quality and tread life.
This same logic applies to winter tires. There is not one single tire that will fit everyone's needs.

-If you live in an area where you do not see much snow, but still need a winter tire for the bad days, it would be best to look at the performance winter/snow category. These tires will handle very well on dry roads, but will still provide adequate traction in the ice and snow. These performance winter tires typically have higher speed ratings.
-If you live in an area where you wake up to fresh snow covered roads often or maybe are new to driving in the winter, you are going to want the absolute best winter traction. The studless ice & snow category is going to provide the best winter traction, but will give up some dry road responsiveness. When the going gets tough, these tires will give you the most confidence in bad weather.

In the performance winter category, here are some of the top performers this season. Click on each and it will take you to the details:

Pirelli Winter Sottozero 3
Michelin Pilot Alpin PA4
Bridgestone Blizzak LM001

The Pirelli and Michelin have proven themselves and are currently the highest rated in this category. The Blizzak LM001 is brand new this season and while we expect it to be a class leader, we have not yet been able to test it.

Next up, for the people looking for the most winter traction and do not mind giving up some dry road handling, the studless ice & snow category is going to work best. Here are some of the top performers in this category:

Bridgestone Blizzak WS80
Michelin X-Ice Xi3
Continental WinterContact SI

I personally use the Michelin X-Ice Xi3 on my vehicle because I feel this tire provides the best balance between winter traction, ride quailty, dry road performance and treadlife. If you are solely concerned with the best ice/snow traction, the Blizzak WS80 does have a slight advantage. The WinterContact SI is still a very good competitor, but is slightly behind the two leaders.

*All these are not available in every size. The size you are using may dictate which tires you can use. Many of the performance winter tires are available in the larger 18"-20" sizes, while the studless ice & snow tires are typically more popular in the 16"-18" sizes.*

Most people will not be installing their winter tires on until later in November or even December. Please know, certain sizes and models have limited availability and will sell out before the snow actually gets here so please try to plan in advance and order earlier rather than later.

Feel free to email me directly if you would like to go over your options or if you have any questions. Keith@tirerack.com will be the fastest way to get to me.

If you do order online, when checking out please be sure to reference "Keith/F30Post" as your previous contact. This is the only way the forum receives credit.
Hi Keith,

Will 18 x 8.5, square, Michelin X-Ice 3 - 245/45/18 work on a 2014 335i xDrive ?

Thanks

Hi all, new member here from Illinois. Just got my F30 the other day. Anyone here running Nokians for winter? I ran the WRG3 SUV all weather ones on my X5 (and my wife has the newer WRG4 on her car) and they were sooo much better than any all-season tire we've ever had (Goodyear tripletred and Continental All seasons). Not as grippy as dedicated studded... but I didn't need to change them out the rest of the year. Thing with the X5 is that it had a spare. I'm not sure if Nokian offers their Flat-Run on the WRG4s so that would be my only apprehension on them over the all-season run-flat Michelins. But if they did, I'm probably going to switch out the Michelins to Nokians. I can't praise their winter performance enough.
