iDrive and Touchscreen

Got in the car this morning and as I drove off, noticed a hair on the idrive screen.

So went to wipe it away with my finger and the screen moved!!

WTF! How long has ID6 been touchscreen?? I really had no idea. Not that I'll ever use it but feel a bit of a muppet that I didn't know it did that

I know, I know, should have

It's one of those things that sounds good in the brochure but is really of no practical use IMHO.

Well, the first M4 I bought had apple car play and I thought it would have been more useful if it was touchscreen. M4 was a June 2017 build and wasn't touch then.

So on the replacement, I dropped CarPlay off the spec but I'm now thinking it would be quite good with the touchscreen.

Just had a look on BMW connected website and can retro add CarPlay for £235 so might just go for it.

I'm still a muppet tho for not knowing .........

My 240 has it. I disabled it.
Do you have gesture control Rukka? I drove a 530e with it last week. Load of bollox

No gesture control - I probably looked an even bigger muppet trying that as I was driving along

I't was introduced for the LCI M3/M4 as far as I can find out so the last two cars had it and I didn't know

I find it useful to scroll around the mapping when stuck in traffic to see where the nearest junction is etc

I agree with the comments on the touchscreen and I really don't find a need for it, or the inevitable fingerprints all over the screen.

However, I'm quite liking Gesture Control. I have the programmable 'two fingered gesture' (no really) set to navigate to my home address. So wherever I am, I just flick 2 fingers at the screen and it sets the nav up to take me home.

Possibly. Too far away in normal driving though.

You can get a lifetime FSC code & activate it yourself for around £100.

Providing you don’t need a WiFi antenna & Coding!

Is there a ‘how to’ and what hardware you need to do this?

The finger prints is the reason I disabled mine. Didn't realise you could give it the twos. I'd had only used the car for the day. So didn't get right into it.

Didn't know you could disable it - certainly couldn't find an option in the idrive

Sorry Rukka. I should have made it clearer I had mine coded out along with a couple of other things. It's gesture control you can turn off via idrive

I had a pre-LCI 330d and now have an LCI 340i with touch screen. Although aware of the touch capability, I keep forgetting as I'm used to navigating with the wheel.

However, I've recently started finding it more useful.

For example, want to switch from reverse camera to surround view? Previous approach: joystick left, scroll down, press. 3 movements and it's a pain. New approach: just touch once.

Zooming in and out of the map using the pinch-spread gesture is more intuitive than the wheel.

Navigating around Carplay is way less hassle using touch.

In general, iDrive functions are optimised for the wheel so mostly work fine without touch. (Though not always, see above).

Carplay on the other hand works (in my opinion) badly with the wheel and touch is much better.

Cheers bwrlane - will certainly give it a try.

@R99 - Car play is £235 as a one off payment from the Connected store so might go that way rather than faff with FSC codes etc. Appreciate it is dearer this way but I'll dodge the issues if it gets wiped at service time etc. But thanks for the heads up anyway

No bother!

I think via connected drive it’s only a 3y subscription?

Yes mate - you're right. It is a 3yr subscription.

I'll probably be fed up of it by then anyway
