I had this issue on my Sep 2012 build 328i. Drivers side tail light sticking out and loose. Took it to the dealer, who took about an hour. I think their fix involved some adhesive, since they said that they could not do the normal dealer card wash till the adhesive set. They invited me to bring it back for a car wash the next day. That was a couple weeks ago, seems to be okay for now.

As a follow up, I had mine replaced a few weeks ago and a week later it happened again. I guess they did not really repair it and just replaced the light cause it was full of water/corrosion. Seems to be ok so far.

Just wanted to update this thread a bit. I just took our MY13 320i in for service because the left rear tail light was falling out. My SA told me that it's an extremely common problem and they had a few this week already. Wow!
They installed a new housing for the left rear and used a 'new BMW sealant' to ensure that the right tail light would remain in place as well. Seems like they have a lock on the problem, and once it's fixed it will remain fixed. |

This happened to my 328i too. January 2013 build from Germany. My dealer took care of the problem with a replacement part.

I was washing my car when I noticed inner tail light sticking out! I am dissappinted in how the tail light attached to the trunk. My car is a 2014 with 8,000 miles on it. This should no be happening already.

Wow, this is STILL happening?
The saga with my 2013's driver side tail light was finally resolved... ... and guess what I saw yesterday? The passenger side is loose and sticking out. And I had in for service last week. Oye. |

Issue can happen years later
This is a late addition to the thread but I thought I'd share. Both of my trunk-mounted tail lights came loose after the warranty expired. My build was July 2012 in Germany.
As an engineer, I could tell the design of the tabs and how they fit the car was poor. One came loose after 5 years going over a speed bump. The other after 6 years closing the trunk a bit hard. The outboard tab is too tight for its slot - it helps to lift the lip of the slot slightly to reduce the stress on the tab. In one of my cases, the tab broke off. In both cases, other protrusions also broke so a complete replacement was the proper solution... but I didn't trust the weakness of the design. Ultimately I made some metal brackets to hold the assemblies in place. It's not pretty, or easy (don't ask!), but it's hidden and strong. A large amount of good adhesive in all the right places could do the trick - could be stronger than the original design which is flimsy and complex. Good luck. |

Just had the same problem on my 2013 Sport Line. I believe I have a broken tab (and no more warranty...) and will have to replace. Anyone have any advice on where to put adhesive when I do the reinstall? I imagine anywhere the tabs make contact.

Perhaps all the way around as well - not many places make contact so maybe the area where the foam gasket is. You would want an adhesive that won't eat the foam if going on it. Also, if you are getting a new light, I suggest taking a large screwdriver and gently bending the slot the long (outboard) tab hooks into out slightly to reduce the force on the long plastic tab. This assumes they didn't redesign it - I'm sure mine was overstressed since installation.

The part was redesigned somewhere is 2014 IIRC. Usual retail is about $120-150 for the redesigned part, which features stronger tabs. Many online retailers carry the new part. I am not sure if you need an adhesive. I would be worried about disasembly should the need arises. Also, in my case, I had to screw in the adjusters for the trunk lid as the trunk only shut when slammed.

Hi there. I have a 2012 335i which is well passed its warranty period. Notice the truck tail light was falling off. When to dealership to see what they could do for me given I have purchased many cars from them. Well the best they could do is 15%off the part and no labour... still close to $400. I have to ask this ... since replacing any of the bulbs is done by removing the truck inner panel and NOT removing the tail light assembly... could I just glue the assembly in place?

You can. I would not suggest it as if a stone chips your light:something cracks/breaks it, you will have to take it off somehow...taking paint off eith it. Before mine was replaced I had to drive around for a few days with "staples" for a lack of better word holding the light to the trink lid. I used the metal staples that hold together heavy duty cardboard boxes (for appliances for example) - I bent 3 of them in a way to hold the light against tne trunk lid. It was far from pretty but worked great and was not visible from the outside - you can only see it if specifically looking for that alteration when the trink is open. In order to protect the paint I placed a small piece or rubber pad under the "staples". That setup held the light in place for a few days until I was able to get the car back to the dealer. I would not suggest mine as a long term solution but to me gluing exterior parts that might need to be disassembled is at least a tricky proposition.
