BMW Insider: Next-gen 6 Cylinder (N55 successor) to debut with F32 4 Series Coupe
Insider Scott confirmed that with the introduction of the F32 next spring also the new so called 335 or 340 will also be introduced. (subs. power increase)
So I am guessing that the F30 335 will also get the treatment later on. In talking about the F10 LCI spied prototypes this is what he said: Quote:

Also, how much power can they get out of the new engine? Isn't the new M3 supposed to have 400/400? If the new 340i has 350/350, that's waaaay too close IMO. |

And this is why the PPK is such a small bump?

You won't be seeing official specs for the F80 M3 until its actual debut, but we've gotten some insider info on what to expect from the next M3's engine. Read through some of the recent articles at that link or at our F80 M3 forums.

I doubt they're going to wait a year and put it in the F30. Didn't BMW first announce the N54 for E92 and then put it in the E90 the same year?

Well my money is on the new engine debuting with the 4 series and shortly after the 5 series LCI. Year after it starts in the F30 at or close to its LCI. So, 2015 model year?
It's not even a given we get it the first year... |

Makes sense as the E90 received the N54 treatment once the E92 introduced the engine! Hope the early F30 335i purchasers aren't too annoyed at this. |

So will this be the first 6 based off the new modular I3/4/6 engine platform that has already produced the N20 as well as the new 1.5L I3 engines that will be sold in Minis, lower end BMWs, and the upcoming BMW i8 sports car?
If so, the BMW promotional material claimed that the platform was designed for up to 75hp per cylinder. So up to 225hp I3, up to 300hp I4, and up to 450hp I6. They are already producing a 240hp and they achieved an even greater proportion of the platform's "potential output" in the 220hp 1.5L I3 in the i8. I don't think that 350hp is too much to hope for in the new I6. If you look at the current engines you have a 240hp I4 and a 445hp V8 that you have to put an engine between. Don't forget that the V8 is also overdue for a true full platform replacement that will likely boost its output a considerable amount to compete with the latest offerings from Audi and MB. |

I would imagine that this will make it to the coupe then the sedan the following year... That means (if my math is right) that just as the second year of the coupe starts rolling in I will be trading out of my '12 335i... That works for me!

I think it is a fact of life that everything you own becomes old fast these days as the pace of change is increasing. You can upgrade wheels, tires, brakes, etc and add a bit of power to the car as time goes which tends to keep one interested in one's ride. What really concerns me is the amount of electronic tech in these cars which gets old really fast and isn't really something that can be upgraded or even replaced at a reasonable price when it breaks. All of our cars are going to get old really fast. It was kind of nice in the old days ie 1960s when high tech was a cassette deck and A/C and power windows were cool. The engines had a carb or two and a distributor. It was all so simple, easy to work on, and upgrade. Now our cars are rolling computers with outdated hardware the day they are built. I guess we just enjoy them for a short time and trade out 3 to 5 years down the road. Who is going to be running these cars in ten or fifteen years time. I have a 23 year old 1990 300ZX Twin Turbo which was a tech marvel when it was new. Seems like a simple piece of machinery in comparison with the BMW. Anyway, sorry for my long winded response. Happens when you are an old guy. |
