Did you guys recalibrate the speedometer after you switched to a smaller diameter rims? It's not a big deal because when driving on smaller diameter tires, your speed is actually lower than what the car actually shows. So if you go with 130km/h on 18", you actually drive with 120km/h on 17"... Approximately, of course.
Just wondering. |

why would you recalibrate ? Not necessary as long as your overall diameter and tire size (winter set) are within the stock spec. Ideally, if you can achieve a deviation of less than 2%, then you have nothing to worry.

I'm picking up a set of Michelin X-ice xi3 with a set of aftermarket alloys. They seem to get the top pick on Consumer Reports with the following remarks:
Rating 62 CR's Take A very good choice if sure-footed winter grip is the top priority. Highs - Excellent snow traction and stopping grip on ice. Low rolling resistance, a factor in fuel economy. Lows - Relatively long dry and wet stops. Handling and hydroplaning resistance are just fair. The Bridgestone Blizzak WS70 get the following: Rating 58 CR's Take A good choice for severe winter driving. Highs - Excellent snow traction and very good grip on icy surfaces. Lows - Fair dry braking and long stops on wet pavement. Slow steering response and low limits in our emergency handling course. Was there a reason most of you went with the Blizzak's? I've already ordered mine and they are going to be installed Thursday but I might be able to make a late change if there's an advantage to the Blizzak's. Thanks |

For me it was a personal choice.
I read a lot of reviews (mostly on 1010tires) and I even made my own algorithm of picking a tire based on your area's driving conditions (more wet than snow or ice for example) and where I live I found out that Hankook iPike would have been the best tire for me (cost/performance/tread wear/etc...) but the guy where I got the tires from swore the Bridgestone would last longer and they are a better tire overall. So who are you going to trust? I went with the tire guy's advice. As well, if you look on the main forum's tire thread, our fellow BMW users from Alaska trust only Bridgestone. And their winters are messed up compared to ours. This says a lot to the quality of the tire, but then again, a tire that performs admirably at -30 and in snow might not do so well at around 0 and wet conditions. Only you can decide what tire to go with. |

Thanks for the advice.
My wife has had Blizzak's for 3 winters in Ottawa on her Infiniti ex35 and I found them to be "ok" but I wasn't overly impressed with their grip. The AWD is pretty good on that car and it's also rear wheel drive biased so it would seem that the Blizzaks would behave similarly on the 328. They are pretty quiet and I do find them to provide a good ride for winter tires. My own informal survey from other winter tire users whom I know seemed to favour the X-ice but as you said, it's really a matter of looking at what works best for each person and their own wild/crazy Canadian winter. They should fit fine, just the tire size will be off as the e90 uses 225/45/17 while the f30 uses 225/50/17. I just recently mounted the 17 inch wheels I had on my old e90 onto my new 2013 328xi.

The offset was fine as well. The wheels fit nicely in the wheel wells and don't stick out any different from the stock wheels.

I recently got a new set of M5 replica rims along with Blizzaks (LM-60's). Stayed with 18" all around.
My 335i looks great and rides very confidently in the winter conditions (snow/slush/ice). |

going to get X-Ice Xi3 on my 2012 328i sport line from simply tire. I am lucky they are open on Sunday and before the new year. I didn't realize my tires were performance summer tires until i tried to drive in the snow a couple days ago.
I have also used tires 23 in mississauga for my other winters. Would have gone back to tires 23 but they are closed to the new year. |

I think the 330d and 335i have slightly larger rear brakes than the 4 cylinder models. So the moral is try before you buy or go for the 18s. Unfortunately running 18s means that if you want to stick with the run flats (like I do), your only option is Pirelli SottoZero, which cost about 40-50% more than decent winter RFT 17s, such as Dunlop WinterSport M3. |

I got in touch with Allen beforehand and he had the tires mounted on the wheels before I got there. So when it was time for my appointment, it took less than 30 minutes to get my car ready.
