Tool for cutting interior trim?

Anyone done mods that require cutting holes in trim pieces? What is best thing to use? Dremel? What kind of bit?

I'm going to want to cut a hole, somehow, in some part of trim to mount a bass control knob.

Thank you

To avoid frizzled edges I would suggest you to use a heated scalpel to cut in superficially the switch borders. After that feel free to grind out the rest with a dremel. But I wouldnt try to drill out the whole hole and grind the remaining material.

also if you must drill or cut with either dremel or drill use masking tape, mark on the masking tape and cut or drill through it, it will help you with a cleaner finished cut or hole

Are you mounting a knob requiring a round hole or a switch requiring a rectangle or square? If round in addition to the masking tape, which I would do as well, I've had good luck heating the back end of the drill bit with a torch then pressing it into the trim where you will eventually drill. Melted the gloss finish and eliminated any splintering.

to cut through vinyl, run the drill in reverse if using a hole saw bit. we do this when installing new speakers into vinyl panels. Also use painters tape to mask off where you are cutting

Awesome tips, thank you all!

Not sure what shape the switch setup is, won't know until my kit gets here.
