My imported 1988 Suzuki Alto Works RSR

Hello

Just recently imported a car from Japan to the USA. I wanted something unique and fun that would serve as a car to work on and learn more about cars.

I ended up importing a 1988 Suzuki Alto Works RSR

It is the epitome of 80's kei cars.

.5 liter 3 cylinder turbocharged engine
revs to 10k RPM
4WD
Stickers on the outside, and crazy interior . Mine is kinda the tame version, the other interior option is hot pink which I was looking for, but couldn't find!!

I bought the car from japancardirect.com and did the import paperwork myself + broker

Amazeballs! That IS one of the quintessential 80s Kei cars. Congrats!

(A related aside: I've seriously thought about importing a Japan-only bass guitar on a number of occasions. That market gets THE best rock basses available, and has for decades. For instance, John Taylor (Duran Duran) wouldn't have developed 'his' sound if it wasn't for an Aria Pro bass he bought in Japan on that band's first world tour -- and Metallica wouldn't really be Metallica without its Pre-California Pro Shop ESPs and the Aria Pro that Cliff Burton preferred before his death.)

Years ago we brought over one of these along with a few more coveted cars as all we had to do was pay for the transport costs...it was thrown in as a freebie. Ran a 21 second 1/4 and made 33 whp after ignition advance and more octane

I could lift the rear easily and I'm 145lbs.

People often forget that in 1988, Suzuki also started making this:

It and the Kawasaki Ninja line were the high-strung sportbikes of the day. Nothing else (not really even Honda quite yet) came close to 'em.

Such a cool car, congrats!

Can't say I have ever heard the term "Twin Cam 12" before though.

Cool as f*&#!!

I'd love to import something from Japan. In just a few years, there's going to be some really good stuff available.

The price was within budget, about $5k. The car itself is quirky with the 10k rpm limiter and FWD. I hope to keep it and enjoy it, and hopefully sell it to make some $$$

The car itself? about 3 grand in auction. However, I am slowly fixing things up, a lot of which is cosmetic thankfully. I did have to get the A/C repaired in japan which cost $650. Shipping to the USA was $1,000 (ship internally japan 350, then to texas 700). Next on my list is to fix the headliner, which the company from japan included a new headliner they bought, but hadn't installed yet.
