BMW M6 GTLM Finishes First and Second at Canadian Tire Motorsport Park!

Woodcliff Lake, N.J. – July 9, 2017… After reaching the top of the podium at Watkins Glen International last Sunday, Bill Auberlen and Alexander Sims raced the No. 25 BMW Team RLL BMW M6 GTLM to a second consecutive IMSA WeatherTech SportsCar Championship GTLM class victory today at the Mobil 1 Sportscar Grand Prix at Canadian Tire Motorsport Park, in Bowmanville, Ontario, Canada. Teammates John Edwards and Martin Tomczyk finished second in the No. 24 BMW M6 GTLM for the first BMW Team RLL 1-2 finish since Long Beach 2013. The win was the 15th in team history since 2009.

Auberlen, starting the No. 25 M6 from second, and Tomczyk, starting the No. 24 from fourth, wasted no time in racing to the front of the GTLM field as the green flag waved to start the two-hour-and-forty-minute race. Auberlen held the point with Tomczyk only some three seconds behind in second during the entire opening stint. Tomczyk was the first to pit on lap 35 for fuel, tires and to hand off to Edwards. Auberlen pitted on the next lap for full service and to let Sims take over the No. 25 M6. With one hour complete and after the field completely cycled through their stops on lap 45, Sims was P1 and Edwards was P3 sandwiching the No. 911 Porsche.

With one hour remaining, Sims held a two second lead in first having completed 77 laps. Edwards was eight seconds behind his teammate, in third. Running a longer second stint, Edwards pitted on lap 78 for full service. He rejoined the race in P3. Sims pitted on lap 80, also remaining in the car after full service. Sims rejoined the race in third, the No. 24 M6 moving to second and the No. 911 Porsche moving into the lead.

At 51 minutes to go, the race’s first full-course caution period occurred for a prototype car off in turn two. Rain came and soaked the back straight, but quickly abated and all GTLM cars remained on slicks. The green flag flew on lap 90 and by the next lap both Edwards and Sims carefully negotiated the drying track to take back the first and second positions respectively. Lap 93 saw Sims race the No. 25 M6 back into the lead while Edwards fell back to third. On lap 108 the No. 911 Porsche fell back, promoting Edwards back to second.

The race’s second full-course yellow came on lap 102 for an accident in turn four. Not long after the green flag flew the race was slowed to an even greater extent by a hard rain that ultimately caused the race to end under a third yellow flag on lap 117. At the checkered flag it was Sims P1 in the No. 25 M6 for a second consecutive win and Edwards P2 for a season’s-best finish in the No. 24 M6.

“The weather caused some concern, but we had the pace and were able to control the race,” said Neil Fife, BMW Team RLL Race Engineer. “It has been an enormous effort to get us to this point and we are very pleased to race the M6 to a 1-2 finish. Great job by everyone.”

Bill Auberlen, driver No. 25 BMW M6 GTLM (P1): “Today is as good as it gets. Alex did a great job today no matter what the weather. I am proud to share my 57th win with him.”

Alexander Sims, driver No. 25 BMW M6 GTLM (P1): “That was an awesome race! There was quite a bit of ducking and diving, but even when the rain fell and we were still on slicks I believe we were the strongest car. Honestly, my first five or six laps were spent still getting comfortable with this track, but once I found the groove I really started to love this place.”

John Edwards, driver No. 24 BMW M6 GTLM (P2): “That was a stressful, but enjoyable race. I had a great battle with Pilet in the No. 911 Porsche until he had a problem. The rain made for a lot of close calls, but we came away with a 1-2 for the BMW M6.”

Martin Tomczyk, driver No. 24 BMW M6 GTLM (P2): “What an exciting race! We have all worked very hard to get to this point and a 1-2 is a fabulous result for BMW.”

Round Seven of the 2017 IMSA WeatherTech SportsCar Championship, the Northeast Grand Prix, will be held July 22 at Lime Rock Park, in Lakeville, Conn. The race will be broadcast on Fox Sports 2 beginning at 3:00 p.m. ET. Follow BMW Team RLL on Twitter at @BMWUSARacing for “from-the-pit-box” updates all weekend.

If you didn't watch this race, you really missed a great one. There were so many two & three wide nail-biters, plus a couple that went south (sorry Corvette Racing ). The full race should be up on the IMSA YouTube channel in a day or two.

https://www.youtube.com/user/UnitedSportsCar

Thrilled to see BMW take P1 and P2. I'm hopeful they don't BoP the car in to oblivion. The lap times were incredibly close. If you haven't seen it already Alkamel Systems (the official IMSA timing provider) has a ton of data about the races on their IMSA portal:

http://imsa.alkamelsystems.com

The Lap Chart is super cool:

http://imsa.alkamelsystems.com/Resul...2_LapChart.PDF

That shows you the order for each lap, which really gives a sense of how much competition there was at this race. Porsche love to lye in wait and pour it on at the end of races. Pilet in particular seems able to pull a rabbit out of a hat. If it weren't for the #911's fuel pressure issues, we would definitely have seen a different outcome, but hey, that's racing. How many times have we seen BMW in striking distance, only to have a brake failure, gearbox blow up, or whatever?

At the end of it all, it was a very good day for BMW/RLL!

This...

I'm already expecting a 'forced' BoP now that they've won back-2-back. Whatever changes we get, I doubt it'll be like what Ford got last year when they would get to reduce weight/add more air after a win lol

I think if there's any good case for keeping BoP adjustments minor, if any, is how close the pace was. There's a guy on twitter who does really great analysis:

Looking at avg lap times, the top 11 out of 16 drivers were within 1.0s of each other. The top 6 were within 0.6s of each other. That's pretty damned tight.

EDIT: For some reason, the twitter link won't show up, so here it is broken up:

twitter.com/thebpillar/status/884338616532692993

EDIT EDIT: Now it is

I think also these last two tracks favor a larger car. Let's see how it all plays out. They've been just solid mid pack, a tad behind the leaders before. Now I think things are even

Correct but thats GT racing. It's homologation and every car is adjusted to provide close competition. When the Ford came out last year it was destroying everything until the adjustments were made. The BMWs needed the bump this year as they were quite a bit off pace the first two races. I think we are at a sweet spot now with everyone really close.

The M8 will be the new car for next season which we will see at Daytona. Who knows how competitive it will be out of the box and what BoP adjustments will be needed.

Either way, BMW was dominating the last two weekends and it's great to see when everything just lines up perfectly.

Watched it from Moss corner in person...very good race as the 2 911RSR's were nose two tail with the M6's for the vast majority of the race...but in what world would a road 911 GT3 compete with an M6?? Porsche would destroy the tank M6

But I know...these are not road cars so hats off to BMW

Gotta say, I'm really jealous. This was a helluva race up until the caution at the end.

Def a very good race...$50...can't beat it plus at Mosport you can sit anywhere, go anywhere including the pits and best of all bring your own food and drink with the emphasis on the "drink"!!

IMSA races are pretty cool like that. Much better access than some of the more popular series. We're making the Rolex 24 at Daytona an annual thing, and then picking other races throughout the year (hoping to hit Petit LeMans this year). I love how you can walk around to the tables and meet the drivers, hang out on the track before the race, walk through the pits with all the cars and drivers out there. I even saw a lady climb in to a GTD Porsche 911 R as her husband proposed. IMSA runs a great series! I'm so glad BMW is a part of it

Agreed...can't beat the access...not to crap on Indycar or F1...having gone to both before as well, you are pretty much confined to one small spot to watch from and access is limited everywhere...not to mention it costs a FORTUNE to attend those two series...now IMSA...as long as they keep doing it the way they are doing (and I speak about MOSPORT as that's they only event I'm familiar with personally), I'll keep going. I have not missed a Mosport IMSA race since the good old days in the early 2000s where all the manufactures were involved etc and again...as long as they keep it open access as they do...I'll keep going!

Indy here in St. Pete allows for a pretty good spectator experience. Maybe because it's run on actual streets and not a track that there is more access. Overall a fun experience for any FL locals

That whole situation was bound to go sideways. Three wide and rapidly closing on the left-hander, there was no way that all three were coming out OK. Jan Magnussen (in the Corvette) tweeted that Dirk Muller (in the Ford GT) hit him, which caused him to run wide in to Jordan Taylor (in the Cadillac DPi). It was one of those crashes that, while avoidable, would have requires someone to give up position... and these are race car drivers. Heh. Not happening.

I'm sitting right in Moss corner which would have been the next corner they would have gone through had the crash not happened...taking a drink from my beer...looking up at the sky...hear a thump...look over and see the Corvette in the wall...damn...missed the whole thing thanks to that damn beer!

Come on up to VIR, lots of great vantage points to watch the race. Plus, we run an awesome CCA hospitality tent, visit all the BMW race teams, hot laps with the BMW Performance Center, and some lucky winners get hot pit passes and free ///M school!

Last year we got 'stuck' in the Team RLL garage during a brief rain storm with the cars and drivers. They gave us a detailed rundown of almost every system in the car, cool stories from Auberlen, and tech talks with the engineers.

Nice! I hung out with the RLL General Manager at Daytona during the rain. It's so cool to have access to these guys!

VIR is on my short list too. My brother-in-law (drives an F80 M3) lives in Roanoke, and I've been after him to go to a race. Not sure if we'll make it this year, but possibly next.
