New M256 AMG motor-3.0L-TT with 48v electric turbo

Quote:
The story with the so-called "53-series" is really about the powertrain. AMG's inline-six is based on the regular Mercedes M256 3.0-liter unit that's in the CLS450, but it makes 429 hp and 384 lb-ft of torque in the 53-series.

But where things get really interesting is with the CLS53 and E53's 48-volt hybrid system. These engines replace the traditional belt-driven starter and alternator with an electric motor, called EQ Boost, that sits between the engine and transmission. This starter-alternator regulates the gas engine's idle speed, recuperates energy, and in brief scenarios, provides an extra 21 hp and 184 lb-ft of torque. And because this starter-alternator allows Mercedes to do away with belts, it means this straight-six is smaller than a traditional unit.

This straight-six uses a traditional exhaust-driven turbocharger, but the 48-volt system also spins up an electric turbocharger. Mercedes isn't calling this a twin-turbo engine, as such, but you can think of these turbos as functioning similarly to a typical twin sequential setup. The smaller electric turbo spins up almost instantly, providing nearly lag-free low end power, while the bigger exhaust-driven turbo works higher in the rev range.

Boy, this thing will be a code throwin Btch.

Serious coin for a car that will only go 130 mph, what a joke

Just read that. Has to be a misprint.

Otherwise. WTH.

MB USA has been putting non AMG (full blown Affalterbach) on H rated tires to prevent customer complaints about flat spots for nearly 20 years now. This results in the goofy 130 mph governor in the US.

Also true for most BMW's delivered with All Seasons. Probably an issue for 3 or 4 Americans total.

There will probably be a Sperf option that will raise it to 155.. I doubt much higher.

The only thing new on this engine is that the aircocompressor now also is electrically driven and that they use 48v I guess (reducing conductor wire thickness).
Starter-alternator systems within the same component can be found even in 60's cars, and brands like volvo have had electric turbo's (or electric superchargers) for a few years now.
What is strange is that MB decided to place that alternator/generator inbetween the torque converter and the engine, which results that the engine is shifted foreward in the chassis for the thickness of that alternator/generator. Performance/balance fail if you ask me.
Also the decision on this engine to put the distribution of the valve train at the back of the engine is not new (bmw n47 hint hint) and that can also result in problems if say a chain tensioner goes wrong, the whole engine has to be lifted out (again... N47 hint hint ). But if its engineered correctly its not a bad choice (loads of I6 engines that have no problems with the valve train distribution for hunderds of thousends of miles of course)
