400tq is still better then 330.. doesn't leave much for mods, a tune dp,exhaust, intake will take you way past that. im sure those figures are listed as crank hp too.

whats the 6spd rated at?

You need to learn how to look under the hood, no matter what you do for a chip... But yes a shop will do it for you.

I'm very concerned now, I want a dp and stage 2 and I don't want a dead transmission at 55k! I haven't heard of any ZFs failing on either the BMW or Audi applications yet but it is still pretty new

5 minute install.. by yourself.. it's easy. The problem is the instructions from BMS are at best confusing.

LOL ya.. I was extremely apprehensive of doing it. Ballz convinced me by insulting my manhood. After doing it once though, you'll laugh at how easy it is.

Terry put together a 6 second video which I had to watch about 50 times. Honestly, it would take them so little time to put together proper documentation, but they just don't seem to care.

If you do get it, and you're stuck, ping me and I'll help.

I'm getting tired of waiting on the ppk and thinking of going that route. Seems they have a newer ISO out where you need to clip a diode and install the new firmware but it is a bit smoother in power delivery. (or so it seems) Or perhaps that's stage 2 which is only out for certain vehicles. It's easy to get confused on the forums as to what is being talked about since the N54 and N55 are together and then we have the 2011 N55 vs the 2012+ and then 2013 seems to be a slightly different ECU or something is different.

All that said, can anyone comment about the power delivery/fuel economy difference between the normal car and the tuned one? I'm also interested in how the different modes react (eco pro, comfort, sport, sport+) when tuned. Part of the tune can be tweaked for different accelerator feel when the boost comes on, etc. I'm just wondering how that works with the different modes where the car already does that on its own (probably in a different way).

Hi Mike,

Can you give us an update on stage 1 or stage 2 for the f30 335i? Also, are there any customers that have stage 1 installed already? Any reviews so far?

Thanks!

According to the ZF web site the S6-45 used in the 335i (per RealOEM.com) is rated for 470 NM, or about 345 ft-lbs.

Any F30 335 manual drivers - who's reverse gear is popping out when cold????? I've owned now 15 different BMW's, all manuals this is the first with an issue. Currently also own a E90 335 man. with never an issue. Heard they moved to a new manufacturer! BMW says keep driving it - they can replicate it on new cars on the lot?

thats the s*it I don't like.... For some reason this doesn't surprise me, of course they would make it just barely powerful enough to handle the engines that it's attached too...:thumb down

Oh well mines a lease so I',m still going DP and JB, if it slips at 50k it won't be my problem.

What happens if I accidentally connect the solenoid as well? Will it impact the performance? DoI just yank it off? What is the proper protocol to remove a jb? Tks!

The real advantage that a manual has, in regards to increasing torque, is that you can get/install a heftier clutch to handle the higher torque if you start getting slippage.
For AT you would need work done on the torque converter and I don't know that anyone has anything for it yet.

ZF has variations of the 8sp AT with different torque handling limits.

From Wikipedia:
name max. gasoline torque (N·m) max. diesel torque (N·m) examples
8HP30 300 300 -
8HP45 450 500 BMW 1 Series (F20), BMW 5 Series (F10)
8HP55 550 550 Audi A4 (B8), Audi A6 (C7)
8HP70 700 700 BMW 7 Series (F01), BMW X5 (E70)
8HP90 900 1000 Rolls-Royce Ghost[20], Bentley Mulsanne

F30 328i and 335i use the 8HP45
F30 330D uses the 8HP70
F10 5 series gas engines use 8HP45, same as the F30's.
F10 Diesels us 8HP70, which can handle up to 516lb ft.

Here is the chart from ZF:
Product Type of prime mover Speeds (forw.) Input torque (Nm)
8HP45 Standard /four wheel drive 8 500
8HP55A four wheel drive 8 650
8HP70H Standard / four wheel drive 8 700
8HP90 Standard / four wheel drive 8 1000

Interestingly Audi uses the 8HP55 in the A4, which has a higher torque limit.
It's an AWD application only, whereas the other variants are 2WD and AWD.
The 8HP55 torque limit is 406lb ft/550Nm for gasoline application,
and 479lb ft/650Nm for diesel, according to Wiki.

The chart higher from Wikipedia shows "gasoline" and "diesel" applications, but I don't know if it's 100% correct as it shows
550Nm for the 8HP55 in both gas and diesel.
ZF only shows the max torque limit with no mention of gas or diesel.

The 8HP45, used in the F30's, has a top torque limit of 500Nm, which is 369lb ft.
Wiki's chart shows 450Nm for gasoline and 500Nm for diesel.
450Nm is 332lb. ft, which seems too low to be used with the stock N55, at is shows greater than 300lb ft at the crank according to many dyno's.
I think the 369lb ft/500Nm number is likely correct, as that is what the ZF chart shows.

The 2.0T engine in the A4 doesn't produce more torque than the N20, and even less than the N55.
The 8HP55 variant is an AWD application only, so it's likely a special Audi spec
I wonder why BMW didn't spec a higher limit ZF 8HP variant?

I wonder if it's possible to swap the torque converter from one of the higher torque limit variants into an F30?
Maybe use the 8HP70 from the diesel F30 or F10.
That would be one way to get higher torque handling.
Although I'm sure it would be pricey. Or, find a wrecked car and see how much a used TC would be.

That's not normal. Somethings out of whack.
Hopefully all it needs is a shift linkage adjustment.

I wouldn't accept an "It's normal" answer. I would ask, then demand, that it be corrected.
Popping out of any gear is NOT normal.
