New Tires After 1 Year and 1700 Miles
Hi there,
I'm looking for a sanity check. I have 2016 340xi that I leased new. My car just started making a noise as if it had a flat tire. The tires looked fine, but I took it into the dealership. The dealership indicated that the front tires were severely worn in certain places. I asked how could that be possible with 1700 miles. The response was that it's caused by the car sitting for prolonged periods of time. I'm not really buying that response. I don't drive apt, but it's on the road a few times a week. It's never sat for weeks on end. Naturally, they won't cover this under warranty, though they've agreed to waive the cost of the front alignment. I have never had to replace tires on a car this early. I think that they must have been misaligned from the start. Should I make a bigger stink about this, or should I just eat the cost of the two new front tires? Thanks for any input. |

No tires should wear out at that mileage. Even a severely misaligned front end would not destroy tires with so few miles. I had to replace my fronts at 12,000 miles, which I thought was a bit early. Will be interesting to see what others have to say.

Contact tire manufacturer for warranty claim. Something is amiss.

+1 with that advice. I have a 2008 GMC truck that has 38k miles, and spends a lot of time sitting with no issues.
I'd suspect manufacturing defect in the tires (bad batch). |

Take the free alignment from the dealer but for the tires try a major tire chain like Discount Tire where they can provide the tire manufacturer's warranty coverage. You may have a bad tire or two.
Most people get in the range of 10-30k on the oem tires. |

you drove your car 1700 miles in 1 year.... that's a lot of sitting https://www.tirerack.com/tires/tiret....jsp?techid=42 how about some photos and telling us the tire specs? You should definitely contact the tire manufacturer for tire warranty i've gotten credit for my tires from Michelin for some tread chunking

I think it depends on how long the increments of sitting were, and what the climate conditions were like.
If you drove it most of that mileage in the first month then it say for 11 months it sat there in extreme cold or heat, then it could have surely had more adverse affects. I feel like it's generally a good idea to start and drive the car for a few miles every few weeks minimally. Related to all of this, my MY13 M-sport had 25K miles when I returned the lease, and I never changed the tires nor was the tread low enough to warrant replacing.. makes me wonder what you people do when driving! (And I don't drive like a grandpa) |

Not really, as he said he drives it a few times a week. I only put about 5k a year on mine, and it basically sits five or six days a week in winter. I've never experienced flat spot issues. I remember when steel belted radials first came on the market 40 odd years ago, and they'd flat spot overnight, but after a mile or so of driving the thumping stopped, and they didn't suffer premature wear. Severe wear in just a few places indicates severely out of alignment, and it could happen within 1700 miles. The alignment was probably bad from day one, the dealer knows it, and that's why he's willing to give it away now. If it was a flat spot issue it would have affected all four tires, not just the front.

Wow, that's like an average monthly mileage of 142 miles!! That's not much driving at all. In fact, I really don't understand how you can drive it so little??
That said, the tires should not be ruined. Something is amiss here, or we don't have all the information.

BMW Owners Manual excerpt: Checking the tire inflation pressure Check the tire inflation pressure regularly Regularly check the tire inflation pres‐ sure, and correct it as needed: at least twice a month and before a long trip. If you fail to ob‐ serve this precaution, you may be driving on tires with incorrect tire pressures, a condition that may not only compromise your vehicle's driving stability, but also lead to tire damage and the risk of an accident.◀ Last edited by BMW11; 07-19-2017 at 10:34 PM.. |

Yeah, BMW or tire manufacturer need to sort this out for you. No reason for new tires based on what you have shared so far.

Thanks for all of your replies. I discussed this with the service manager, and he agreed it was absurd. The dealership agreed to waive the cost of the tires and to take it up with Continental. Incidentally, the car had just been in for its annual service not more than two weeks ago. I live and drive in Boston, and the roads and traffic are atrocious, so most of my driving is sitting in traffic.

I had vibration issues within the first 1500 miles. They replaced 2 of the Conti run-flats, without hesitation. They said it might have been that the car had sat on the lot for several months, and the tires ended up with flat spots.
It is kinda weird that you have so few miles in a year, but glad the dealer is taking care of it, as they should. |

Something is definitely amiss. Permanent flat-spotting usually takes extending sitting (8-10 month or more) and is partly dependent on the tire make and compound. Some pics of the tires would help. I've had cars sit for 6 months or more while on deployments with only a little temporary flat-spotting that goes away after 30 min of driving and the tire warms up.

The dealership is not likely to take this issue up with Continental - Continental will tell them to take a hike. They will instead eat the cost or shift it somewhere else. |
