And you will stall all right with or without CDV. It is installed to protect clutch mechanizm.
I agree, the CDV has little, if anything, to do with the 'notchy' feel going from the 1-2 shift. My F10 535i definitely has the CDV and there is absolutely no 'notchy' feel going between *any* gear. It is smooth as butter. Meanwhile, my M3 has no CDV on it yet it is notchy as hell 1-2 and a little 2-3 until the tranny really warms up.

The CDV will effect clutch feel, but not the 'notchy' feel of shifting. That's all in the linkage between the shifter and the tranny and presumably has to do with the tranny and synchros as well.

I haven't tried shifting an F30 yet. Given that BMW did such a wonderful job with the shifting action on the F10, I'm hoping the F30 is very nice.

Benefits of replacing your CDV with a modified unit

After the stock CDV is replaced with one of our modified units, you will be able to shift gears in your BMW like a "normal" car. No more vague, inconsistent clutch engagement. No more jerky 1-2 shifts. You can actually chirp the tires when shifting from 1st to 2nd gear! Parallel parking becomes a breeze and your clutch will love you for it and last much longer. Best of all, your passengers will stop making fun of your driving skills.
I'm not sure where that's quoted from but most of that refers to clutch feel. The bit about "jerky" shifts is a bit ambiguous but I read that as meaning that the as one that the car won't, well, jerk as the clutch is lifted - not a notchy shift, which would only be felt by the driver.

I just took delivery of my 328i 6MT last Thursday and the gearbox is slicker than a cat's ass. No notchiness in any of the gears and the clutch is smooth as butter. The only "tricky" shift is the 1-2 which is still relatively easy compared to my last manual car (G37). Plus, my 328 has the Getrag trans whereas the 335 has the ZF, which is a better transmission. So no issues with F30 manuals.

Gotcha....I was interpreting "notchy shift" to mean jerkiness between 1st and 2nd gears. As far as difficulty moving the shifter between 1-2...I haven't experienced much of that, especially compared to other cars.

I see . Perhaps others could clarify what's being meant by notchy shifts?

I understood it to be the movement of the gearstick because my 2006 Z4, my 2007 E92 and my 2010 E82 all felt a bit notchy when changing from 1st to 2nd - in fact the gearchanges all felt very tight until the car had done at least 5k miles. I've kept my E82 longer than any of those cars though and after 15k miles the box started to feel really silky smooth including when changing between 1st and 2nd, but that was because I ran it in carefully with slow gentle gear changes until I didn't feel that fast changes were forcing anything.

Hmmm...thx for that. That part of manual transmission, I'm going to have to discover going forward. Pundits at BMW, India did not offer manual transmission option even in the days of the fluid coupled torque converter auto boxes. To expect them to offer one now when there is the dry clutch DSG auto box, would be a little too optimistic. Drifting with the DSG auto box might involve braking while simultaneously accelerating. This idea refuses to grow on me. In a RWD car with conventional engine braking, I'm able to catch both a brake drift and a power drift by working on the clutch and gas pedal alone.
Thx again for your clarification.
