The CDV will effect clutch feel, but not the 'notchy' feel of shifting. That's all in the linkage between the shifter and the tranny and presumably has to do with the tranny and synchros as well. I haven't tried shifting an F30 yet. Given that BMW did such a wonderful job with the shifting action on the F10, I'm hoping the F30 is very nice. |

I just took delivery of my 328i 6MT last Thursday and the gearbox is slicker than a cat's ass. No notchiness in any of the gears and the clutch is smooth as butter. The only "tricky" shift is the 1-2 which is still relatively easy compared to my last manual car (G37). Plus, my 328 has the Getrag trans whereas the 335 has the ZF, which is a better transmission. So no issues with F30 manuals.

I understood it to be the movement of the gearstick because my 2006 Z4, my 2007 E92 and my 2010 E82 all felt a bit notchy when changing from 1st to 2nd - in fact the gearchanges all felt very tight until the car had done at least 5k miles. I've kept my E82 longer than any of those cars though and after 15k miles the box started to feel really silky smooth including when changing between 1st and 2nd, but that was because I ran it in carefully with slow gentle gear changes until I didn't feel that fast changes were forcing anything.
