Rim Choices? Also, VMR 810 vs Apex PS-7
Hello,
I have two questions. First, I didn't see a sticky for aftermarket rims brands members are using. Can anyone provide? Also, these are two rims that catch my interest which are pretty much same looking. However, most seem to buy vmr yet many say apex is lighter and stronger. Can you share your thoughts on the flow forged 810 (read old 710s were heavier and paint started peeling with time)? I would appreciate opinions on weight, pricing, and long term durability/reliability on these two and if 810s are now equally comparable to apex. VMR site doesn't seem to state the weight so is hard to compare weights unless there's someone who researched this well. Thanks all! |

I had a set of VMR V710 and now have a set of the Apex PS-7s. Take my opinion for what it's worth, but here are some notes:
- The Apexs are lighter weight than the VMR. My apex are about 21 lbs, and the VMRs were around 25-26 lbs. It is noticeable in all aspects of driving. - The VMRs were relatively strong, even being cast. I did bend two wheels by catching a nasty pothole on I-94 driving to Chicago from Michigan. But they will take reasonable abuse. I didn't have any vibrations or weird issues. The Apexs are "flow-forged", so I hope that they are at least as strong as the VMRs. - The finish on the VMRs were hit or miss - I did drive the wheels over the winter, but I never curbed or damaged them. There were some areas where the finish was coming off on 2 wheels, the other two were perfect. I had the VMRs for about 10 months, and only had the Apexs for a few weeks, so I can't comment on their long term durability yet.

I have Vossens and after two years and pretty large holes hit, they still look new and are straight. They are a bit pricey and I was wondering it they would be worth it and after 2 years I can say a definite yes.

Thanks for sharing your experience. That's why I was doing the new flow form vmr810 comparison in my original post. Looking at the weights of the 810s that were provided they are pretty much the same in weight as apex. As for durability, I'm hoping someone with the 810s can chime in. The fact that you said the fit and finish is hit or miss in terms of in time if they'll hold up doesn't boost confidence. No aftermarket rims are cheap to purchase. |

I think the Apex PS7 is a far better looking wheel. I almost bought them during this spring's group buy - but am leaning away from going with a mesh wheel at the moment (purely a visual decision).

Thanks all for responding. I feel the vmr 810 and apex rim look 90% similar...I'm kind of torn on the route to take since both rims are extremely similar. Vmr 710s were for sure heavier but now 810s are lighter...
