Comparison of 135is Dyno versus 335i PPK

My brother owns a 135is with I think about 8k on it. He got it dynoed for the first time today and pulled 301 whp, 345 wtq on a mustang dyno. Quite impressive.

They did 3 pulls, the lowest was 286/364 which is interesting in itself. They did two pulls, a cool down, and then the third pull. The one below is the third, the 286/364 was the first pull I believe. I don't know the numbers from the 2nd pull.

We thought it'd be interesting to see how two N55 engines compare. Especially since the 135is is basically an "old" PPK N55 versus my F30 with the new PPK.

They dynos ended up being about 3 months apart, but the building is climate controlled, so ambients were very similar. A bit more humid on the day for my run.

I was able to get my 335i (RWD, 6MT, PPK, 3700 miles on the clock) dynoed yesterday finally.

Few interesting notes to start with. I had heard there were issues getting the RWD cars to dyno. We did indeed struggle quite a bit. The car refused to go above 5k regardless of traction and DST settings. We tried both sport modes, and the full DSC off. We tried with the hood open (it gave us warnings for that, so we closed it). We got ABS errors almost immediately etc.

Then we locked the front rollers together with the rear (Mustang AWD dyno), and it cleared all the errors almost immediately. We were able to start getting above 5k, but the dyno was setup wrong for loading and it was really slow. It took a few unsuccessful pulls before they changed some settings and were then able to rev out without issue. We then got one full pull from 2k to 5500, followed by the final pull which is what you see below which was 1500 to 6600.

The reason I mention the dyno troubles is that there was no cooldown. So it was a half hour or so of attempted full throttle periods and then the two final pulls. So I'd wager it was more than a little heat soaked - it smelled hot.

That said, it was amazingly consistent. Even on aborted pulls we were seeing 315-330 ft-lbs at the wheels. The second to last pull that was slightly short put down 310 hp and 336 ft-lbs.

Then the final pull was what you see below 331 whp, 332 wtq. I think in conversation I will round them up and call the car 335i^3

The dyno graph below is also essentially unsmoothed. With smoothing on the dip in the middle wasn't as bad. The torque curve is wonderfully flat, and the HP is pulling right on up to redline with little issue. We went a little short of redline with the 6600 pull, but it's enough that it looks like the peak horsepower was captured and you can see the fall rate is not bad.

Clearly the new MPPK tune is rather nice (flat long torque curve) - and quite powerful. This dyno is known in the area for reading a bit low as well compared to the other two dynojets nearby.

Overall rather pleased. 12% drivetrain loss puts it at about 375 crank which is nothing to sneeze at!

Found another stock IS dyno on bimmerfest that was on a dynojet. Similar numbers. 10 hp higher and I think 20 ft-lbs... Either way, car is massively underrated. Very curious to see what mine will do in comparison.

yeah, pretty insane for stock. I'm afraid after seeing these number only disappointment awaits me with the 335i. I have a hard time imagining it matching that!

Don't be surprised if you match or even surpass it. A member with the new PPK put down 306 on his F30.

344 if memory serves. Remember, you're getting shafted a bit on tq because of manual tranny.

Was his 344 with the Manual? Because my brother's dyno above is with a manual.

That was what I thought was the numbers were more "square" with the manual (like 303/316) versus the auto's showing more of the 303/350 type number. Hence part of my being extra impressed with this 135is dyno being a manual.

The 344 was with the 8AT. The "is" tune as well as both old and new PPK tunes are so obviously underrated.

You'll be happy you ordered the PPK with your 335. Just give it about 1500 miles for the ECU to fully adapt. After that, you'll certainly feel the added power.

I posted some 0-60, 0-100, as well as a 80-120 highway pull on youtube. The high speed pull impressed me the most given I have xdrive.

I'm sure I'll be happy with how it performs, it's more the brotherly competition aspect . I'm not going to do any other mods to the car for a long time, so I plan to just have fun periodically adding MPerformance bits to it until it's well out of warranty. It'll still be the most powerful car I've owned... I have had a few around the 300 mark for rated power, plus an E36 M3, so this will be a fun car regardless and I wanted it for daily driving not track or autocross.

Can't wait to see what the 335i puts down.

I wanted to dyno my car because it feels a lot stronger than I expected, can't believe its "only" 335hp. Unfortunately after seeing the issues that can arise from when the dyno operator doesn't know F30s that kind of changed my plans because none of the dyno shops in my area are familiar with them at all.

What kind of issues? Links? The place I'll take it to is a Porsche specialist and a very good race shop, so I'd assume they can operate well, but am curious what you are referring to.

The computer putting the car in limp mode because the front wheels aren't turning.

I remember this post from not too long ago:

I agree. I think that MPPK stated power and torque are underrated.
According to my butt dyno (and according to track comparison with a tuned 335i), max power is around 350/355hp...
Maybe I'm wrong...

331 whp/ 332 wtq. Awfully good numbers I thought for a stock car with 3700 miles on it!

Especially considering the heat soak. I was quite surprised!
