MPE Exhaust Mod

Well as some of you know I was planning on cutting open an MPE for Science!! Yesterday my buddy dropped off the grinder that someone donated to our cause so I can now officially start working on the muffler. I am planning on Mig welding the inside pipes and TIG welding the outer case so it stays rust proof with some SS Filler rod. I will try and keep this updated and get this done ASAP.

Bless you!

I gutted my OEM muffler last weekend and it was a mega pain in the ass! LOL

I cut the muffler completely open on the top and bottom, welded the holes shut and then put the skin back on and welded it up. It's a pretty terrible job to be honest, so much work in fact that I should have just built an entirely new exhaust system.

I'm still looking for the right stainless muffler so I can build my own system with true 3 inch stainless tubing. I will also keep the electronic valve. hehe

In for a sound clip of this though!

Honestly I like a challenge. Like you have seen in one of my previous posts I made my own axle back system for my car and it was a job but it was fun.

Oh yea, I know what you mean. I love messing with my car but I'm in the garage most days working on stuff and after I pulled my exhaust off (I installed my DP at the same time) and had it up on my work table and was like... I'm about to regret all of the work that's about to go into cutting this thing open. hahahahaha

Sure enough, I did it and put it back on the car and was like... meh... it's not as loud as I hoped it would be.

The MPE muffler is going on a buddies car. It's my muffler but I am just going to mod it and let him use it as well as cut the resonator off of his car and weld a straight pipe on there. I will however connect the valve on his car.

I will be starting work on my muffler today! Are there any things that I should be aware of that people had trouble with on the oem muffler? Is there a shell like case on those?

Looking forward to this! I was following the modded muffler thread on here and was going to gut it and weld the inside holes shut.... But ended up pulling he trigger on an awe exhaust. Keep us updated and take pics! Curious how the m performance muffler looks inside compared to stock.

Yes the grinder is key. Mine is Bosch and I had good quality wheels. Get thin wheels as possible. I was going to do this on the MPE when I did that oem post but I had a buyer for the MPE and that was a no go as he wanted it to stay in tact.

MPE is so quiet so not worth the money. I love my gutted cheap muffler

Good luck and please keep us posted, we're all dying to see the differences internally.

Update

Got a new grinder. The donated one was hopeless. I'll write this off as a "College" expense for my account :P

No filler material like the factory muffler has. What are you going to do now?

I plan on cutting some more of the shells off as I don't have a sawzall to but the perforated pipe with. Then go and get some pipe after I measure it with my calipers.
