Sudden excessive idle engine noise on 335i M Sport

Today our 1 month old 2013 F30 335i M-Sport Sedan with almost 1000 miles on it suddenly started making a rather loud engine noise "roar" when idling at stoplights during a short trip. According to the tach it was idling at normal RPM. Since the trip was short the engine hardly got a chance to warm up and the outside temp was about 45 F.

When I got the car home I popped open the hood to take a listen. It was a roaring sound somewhat reminiscent of the sound that a diesel truck makes when idling. I shut the engine off and then turned it back on. The roar was gone and our F30 sounded normal again.

Has anyone else experienced this with the F30 335i? Could the cause be something that triggered the engine cooling fan to run faster?

Thanks.

Bob

I get all sorts of intermittent screeching sounds and groaning noises even with the car off, not to mention driving. I told my advisor and the tech said it's normal, which i think is pure BS.

It's your cooling fan. There have been a few posts about this recently. It sounds like there's a bad batch of thermostats causing the fan to run even though the oil temp hasn't reached the trip point. Have the dealer investigate the next time it's in for service.

your thermostat is going to trip up your fan, and eventually the fan will die...take it to the dealer sooner rather than later, there are a number of people on here that are going through that.

Thanks and appreciated for the info. I will bring our car to the dealer on Monday to ask them about it and request that they check the thermostat. Hopefully our dealer will have heard about this issue. I

I will look for other posts here about this problem. Do either of you know if the reported thermostat/fan issues have been intermittent at first and then become more frequent as the thermostat fails?

DI is responsible for the diesel-like ticking sound. Is this what you are referencing?
