I really enjoyed the programme - my last three cars have been VW, Audi and now BMW. I did road test a Merc too before choosing the BMW. Aside from the reputation for reliability and quality I just prefer the look of many German cars. Many modern Japanese cars are hideous inside and out, modern Fords have horrid interiors. So many cars with iffy build quality too (mainly French). My choice of buying German has nothing to do with image or status, it's because they build cars I like the look of and feel solid, safe and comfortable to drive. I regularly deal with Germans and on the whole I like their attitude.

I enjoyed it too, though there was a brief reminder of where BMW drivers got their image from a good few years back... It reminded me how I used to say:-

- never a BMW
- never a diesel
- never an automatic.

Thankfully, they also says 'never say never' otherwise I'd be looking pretty stupid now!

I referred to this recently re: the image, but I get frustrated by the comments about "BMW drivers" or "Audi drivers". Our company changed policy in terms of what manufacturers were available and within a relatively short period of time the fleet went from probably about 80% Audi to about the same percentage BMW. They are largely exactly the same drivers.

Like you, I never thought i'd own a diesel or automatic - i've now had both, just not together, maybe next time....!

Apparently Clarkson wasn't too happy about the scheduling. Was it on straight after the flag waving bit of Top Gear?

I saw him moaning on Twitter about it.

That said, I have no time for him, his show or his opinions. I will be seeking out this German car programme though

But the programme on German cars did highlight the fact that it was the management and their attitudes that brought about the demise of the UK car industry. Compliments about the UK workforce and the fact that we haven't really got the mass production attitude, we're more at home to hand finishing a bespoke car than churning out models. I actually thought it complemented the Top Gear ending.

Some of us were driving BMW cars before the "image" was created by the "yuppie" brigade. We were appreciative of BMW's design and engineering.

Didn't watch it but did they bring up the no limit autobahns at all? I think that's a big factor in vehicle design
