Dealership scratched bumper of CPO before delivery
I put a down payment on a CPO 2013 335i yesterday and the dealer called to say the detailer was pulling out the car and another car hit it and scratched the bumper. They are going to fix it, but should I expect anything more? I realize it only sets me back a few days, but it really has me pissed. I've already said I won't complete the transaction until after I see the finished job.
What do you guys think? |

You might be able to get them down a few bucks--if the bumper needs to be repainted, tell them to get their trade-in appraiser to talk to you, and ask him how much he would ding a trade-in if he saw a bumper was re-painted.

If it were me I'd probably take a look at the damage just to make sure it's not something that would make me change my mind about the car. I wouldn't settle for a touch up, but if you're satisfied with the repair, and it doesn't affect the car's history, then I guess it's just a minor inconvenience. Maybe they should throw in a small freebie to show they care.

Make sure the repair is good. Some dealerships are notorious for cheap and shitty repair jobs.

Is the VIN on the front bumper on BMWs someplace? Matching VINs are nice to have. If they're replacing the bumper and the VINs won't match it might concern me.

I'm fairly confident they will not replace the bumper, but there does appear to be a bit of a gauge in one spot.

What color? Dealerships often repaint the front bumpers for CPO cars anyways due to these cars propensity for rock chips. When I bought my CPO EBII, the blue on the front bumper didn't match the car. It's a hard color to match and I had to bring it back. So glad I did though, it's perfect now. So if it was me, I'd be fine with the repaint, just make sure its perfect.

If it's not fixed to your liking you do not have to buy the car of you have not taken delivery.

Well first of all I'd determine just how bad the damage is. If it looks minor that only require a respray at most then I'd be focused on making sure the job is done right so that 1) the paint matches and 2) parking sensors, if any, continue to work properly since bad respray jobs can screw them up.

Don't worry about your down payment. The will refund you if you don't want the car.

^^ this. You can't ever trust a description or a photo to know exactly what the damage looks like in person. You might find it's nothing a good buffing can't fix or you might find it's a bigger deal than they make it sound.

Some good points here. If it's just the bumper being replaced. Let them replace the bumper and then tell them you're not taking the car. Hopefully it'll give you a decent discount.

If the repair is made to BMW standards - that is, undetectable by an appraiser, it won't make any difference at trade-in time. My wife had a 2005 325i sedan that someone sideswiped when parking their Buick Battleship in the parking garage. Driver-side rear door and quarter panel were creased. The dealership had a designated repair shop that was certified for BMW-standards work, and when it was completed, we had the used-car dept. check it, and they found no indication of what was repaired. No overspray or rough paint anywhere, no part stickers present, etc. If the OP's dealership will repair it to these standards, it won't affect value. At the very least, they should replace the bumper cover instead of attempting to repair it. They're not that expensive, and a certified painter should be able to match the color perfectly.
Bumper covers are always a tiny shade different than the body, since they are painted separately from the other body components at the factory, according to several sources I've checked with. I had a front lip installed on my 2007 E92 that had to match the existing bumper, and I was shown spray-out sheets that matched the body but didn't match the bumper and vice-versa. When the lip was painted and installed, it was not possible to tell the difference. Not every body shop/painter is that good, but if they're BMW-certified, there will be no way to tell that the bumper cover was replaced. If there's no sheet-metal damage, there's no real cause for alarm.

I wouldn't sweat it or even give it a second thought until I saw the repair. If it's good, you're good to go. If not, either you give them a second chance or you walk. |
